New "homemade" Intake

I figured I would post this up since it was a cheap option to the Mazdaspeed/AEM intake. We used 90 degree mandrel bends, then cut them down to fit the area and welded a bracket to the back side of the pipe for stability. All of this was done with 3.5" ID piping. I cut out the factory MAF holder out of the plastic pipe it was made with, then drilled two holes to secure it. The MAF holder is rounded and fit perfectly on the piping. I did use some blue RTV sensor safe sealer just in case there would be a leak there. I don't have any dyno info, but it feels a lot better than the factory setup and also a setup I tried where I put a cone filter in the factory airbox. Critizm and hate is sure to follow, but that's fine. Any questions or comments are welcome. I only paid $100~ for the parts and a friend of mine helped with the labor. All of the piper where welded and then sanded to look like one solid pipe.

Nicely done i guess. I could appreciate all the hard work on it etc but PLEASE dont ever fabricate this and slap a Mazdaspeed badge on it.
Its like getting your exhaust guy to make you an exhaust and you putting a GREDDY label on the tips. At the end of the day its your car. As long as you're happy |
The MAZDASPEED badge probably wont stay. I had an extra one from getting the oil cap and thought "What the hell'...

nice effort, but im just confused why all that effort was made and you didn't consider a better way to come off the TB instead of using the accordion tube at some crazy bends.
Also, check your fuel trims .... i take it you didn't incorporate any airflow straighteners |

Actually doesnt look so bad aside from the accordion tube connection to the throttle body and "mazdaspeed" sticker lol. The bends in the tubing aren't as abrubt as the MS/AEM intakes. Does it still incorporate the stock mesh screens?

Its pretty loud, but not too crazy. It doesn't use any screens at all. I checked the fuel graphs along with the MAF graph the other day with an OBDII device. Everything seems to be fine. Im sure it needs a tune for the MAF, which I do need to have done to maximize using such large piping. I also didn't know there was really an issue with the accordion. Maybe at some point I will replace it with a non accordion style connector or make my own. Also, I don't have any check engine lights for the intake/MAF. I do have CELs for my no cat pipe and my air pump delete. I confirmed everything with an OBDII yesterday after having this intake for over a week. I drive over 60 miles a day so I know if it would of had an issue it would of shown up by now.

The issue with the accordion pipe is, you have this nice straight piece of pipe, then you induce turbulence with the ridges of the flexible piece. Other than that, it's a nice piece of work. |
Very nice work! But the air flow to engine cooling radiator cen be wors?

I liked the look of the MS/AEM intake so I used that for inspiration. Im glad that some of you like it. I will have to fab up something for the accordion tube it sounds like. I appreciate all of the comments good or bad. It revs quicker and I just calculated my fuel mileage and Im at 19mpg driving it at redline at some points and a little freeway driving. I was getting around 17mpg before the intake with my usual driving style/habits.

I went back and checked everything with an OBDII reader again. Apparently the fuel trims are a little off. So I will be adding this- HoneyComb MAF Mass Air Meter Airflow Straightener- TREADSTONE PERFORMANCE

Ended up using the Treadstone Performance MAF honeycomb. It works great. Better throttle response now that the air is straightened.
