New final drive gear available
OEM ratio is 4.44. For only $3800, Mazda Motorsports sells a 5.12 ratio final drive gear...

damn, $3800 is rough. I wouldn't mind a higher final drive ration in the 1st 4 gears, but I am pretty much already at 4000 rpm+ crusing on the freeway in 6th, so the last thing I need is to increase the revs at that point.

Well either you re-gear 1st through 4th or you put in a new final drive gear. As expensive as this one is, which do you think is the cheaper option? :)

yeesh.. that'd reak hell on gas mileage.. if i were to do that, i'd have to pull 6th gear all together and get a different ratio gear so I could cruise at like 3000rpm at 80..

$3800 US... hang on it is about $5000 AUD.

Yes, I agree. I bet it would be an awesome upgrade for autocrossers to get a little more oomph on corner exit.

The 5.12 gear (and transplanting the j-spec 5 gear tranny) are both intended for track use. Autocross benefits as well but that wasn't the intended market.

I think replacing 5th and 6th would be easier than installing a 7th gear

But any recalibration of the speedometer required when you install the final drive gear, say for 4.7 or 5.12? Thanks |

Thanks If the sensors for the odometer are to do with the wheels or driveshaft etc then I would say no as these are after the Diff. I would be tempted to do the 4.777 as I think the car would be a lot more fun but it's a daily driver so I don't think I could afford the fuel which is already costing me over $100.00 a week :( |
