New final drive gear available
 

OEM ratio is 4.44. For only $3800, Mazda Motorsports sells a 5.12 ratio final drive gear...

I don' t expect any but the most hardcore to buy something like this, but I wanted to let people know it's available.

damn, $3800 is rough. I wouldn't mind a higher final drive ration in the 1st 4 gears, but I am pretty much already at 4000 rpm+ crusing on the freeway in 6th, so the last thing I need is to increase the revs at that point.

Well either you re-gear 1st through 4th or you put in a new final drive gear. As expensive as this one is, which do you think is the cheaper option? :)

yeesh.. that'd reak hell on gas mileage.. if i were to do that, i'd have to pull 6th gear all together and get a different ratio gear so I could cruise at like 3000rpm at 80..

$3800 US... hang on it is about $5000 AUD.

But Fujita engineering has a 4.777 final drive for less than $1000AUD! Yen 68,250

That's awesome that it's out, but seems to be a bit too expensive. I think Taka's suggestion of the 4.7 will do fine, won't murder gas mileage but will give the car a nice extra pep.

Yes, I agree. I bet it would be an awesome upgrade for autocrossers to get a little more oomph on corner exit.

Even with the stock rearend I long for a 7th ratio on the highway...

My thoughts exactly, I'm often driving long distances at autobahn speed and would appreciate another gear to keep the revs down. I got used to shift down two gears at once for acceleration in most situations, so a seventh gear would fit perfectly.

The 5.12 gear (and transplanting the j-spec 5 gear tranny) are both intended for track use. Autocross benefits as well but that wasn't the intended market.

I think replacing 5th and 6th would be easier than installing a 7th gear

But any recalibration of the speedometer required when you install the final drive gear, say for 4.7 or 5.12? Thanks

If the sensors for the odometer are to do with the wheels or driveshaft etc then I would say no as these are after the Diff. I would be tempted to do the 4.777 as I think the car would be a lot more fun but it's a daily driver so I don't think I could afford the fuel which is already costing me over $100.00 a week :(
