Need opinions on which clutch to buy

So my clutch bit the dust. I think my father burnt it out thinking it was a 1970 Chevy pickup. I dont have a catch point anymore. Gears go in no problem but they dont fully engage. Think driving at 30mph in 3rd and hitting the gas and watching the revs go up but no acceleration until you feel it catch a bit.

I was looking at clutches and flywheels but i dont think im gonna buy a flywheel. I dont have major power mods and i drive all the time. However, I want something durable because i drive a bit hard and just in case my father drives the car again i want this to last.

I was looking at the Exedy Stage 1 Organic Clutch kit, the Spec Stage 1 kit, Spec Stage 2 kit, and the ACT Performance Street Disk Clutch.

They all more or less look the same with the cheapest being the Spec Stage 1 and Exedy. The others are around $400. The Spec Stage 2 has a great wear rating and all that jazz but i dont think i need it because...well... im practically stock. I want reliability and durability. Little stiffer dont bother me.

I am sort of confused between them all. Is it just preference at this level? Which will last me longer? I dont mind a harder push on the pedal or a shorter catch.

Thanks in advance.

Short answer: If you are still at stock power levels, go with OEM.

Longer answer:
The Exedy Stage 1 is about the same price as the OEM clutch kit, but there are quite a few problems with reliability on the Stage 1. Quite a few of us have had very premature clutch failure with a Stage 1 (I had 2, one lasted 1 year 20,000 miles, the other lasted 3 days, 100 miles). And believe me, buying 2 clutch kits, 2 sets of transmission fluid, spending double the time on your back changing them or double the shop cost to have them replace it.... it's cheaper to get the right one the first time. And no, I never got any warranty reimbursement for either of my two premature failures. Please don't get the Stage 1.

The other clutches don't have much in the way of information around here, but that is largely because they aren't needed unless you are past the torque limits of the stock clutch. Since the torque limits of the stock clutch are around ~220-250 crank torque, you can't exceed that without some significant power mods. OEM is cheaper, more reliable, and entirely sufficient. So just stick with that :)

$375 shipped from BHR, or $360 + shipping from Mazmart.

Edit: Thread where quite a few of us discuss the different Stage 1 failures we have had: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tro...clutch-244381/

Hey RIWWP thanks. Yea I found that thread after I made this one and the Stage 1 is a no go. I get a lot of my stuff from BHR and I didn't even realize they sell the OEM clutch. Go figure. I'll be getting that one. I don't have time for headaches...let alone time for my car breaking.

Thanks again.

He already said he was getting an OEM clutch... 2 days ago.

If you believe the thread should be closed to on topic commentary then you have the powah to do so ... the next noobie who rolls thru here may not be so easily convinced as per the posted thread link

RIWWP 11-23-2013 01:48 PM

Not closed to commentary, just no point in trying to berate him for not picking OEM when he already stated that it what he is going with. It's hostile, unwelcome, and does not actually benefit anyone.

Yes i ordered the OEM clutch from BHR. Best price i could find and from a trusted seller. I decided not to buy a lighter flywheel... i forget Christmas is coming and i got lot of shopping to do. Oh well...such is life right?

Anywho... when i get the clutch installed i should have them cut the flywheel right?
