Cleaning K&N drop in filter

When cleaning a K&N drop in do you really need all the cleaners and oil they recommend on their website?

I was just curious as I have never owned such a filter a I don't have the recharge kit so I wasn't sure if that was just a gimmick to get more money and there really was an easier way.

Yes, that is the recharger kit needed. The original coating was Made by K/N and it would make sense for them to design it to be removed with their own cleaner.
