Modding for the first time...
 

Hi. I finally saved up some money (3.5 grand) to mod my rx-8...
My 8 is bone stock, and Im looking to increase power mainly...what is the best way to go? Thanks

just interested in the most efficent way so that my 8 can keep up with 350z or Sti...

or post me mods that i need .... for my 8 to perform about 400WHP...

Supercharger or Turbo. Greddy is available now for about $3k, actually a little more once you buy the accessories you're going to want. Or Pettit racing is suppose to be coming out with a SC soon for about the same amount. You'll definitly have no problem keeping up with 350's and STI's!

400 whp ? I hope you're joking. The Greddy turbo will give you in the range of 240-250 whp. But unless you have quite a bit more than $3.5K you won't be able to do as you will have installation costs, gauges, gauge pod, etc. Best bet is to get Canzoomer piggyback ECU (tune it), hi-flow cat/straight pipe, Racing Beat Revi air intake, cat back exhaust, and for the last piece Zex 55 shot nitrous. For $3500 you can get all this & easily run with 350Z's & STI's.

What fanman says and throw in a Racing Beat light weight aluminum flywheel with a street clutch.

Good luck with 400WHP :eek: ... I'll be mighty interested if you get it with the 8 using only $3.5k. I think you'll be the first one using the renesis (not the 20B engine).

$3500 is almost enough to get you into the Greddy kit, but that won't get the installation done or cover all the accessories. If your going for bang for your buck with non FI bolt-ons, I would replace the Clutch & Flywheel ($1200-$1500 this includes installation), get lightweight wheels (about $1700-$2000) and the REVi intake.

While this won't add a ton of dyno HP, it will get every last ounce of power out of the engine to the payment as effieciently as possible. Not to mention, the car will be more fun to drive, handle better and have better economy. I'm assuming here that your tires are in decent shape, If not, I would upgrade those also.

Save more money and drop a 20b into the car, maybe after that, add more stuff, spend about $40k+ and you'll have a car about 400HP.

whats is a 20b?..sorry for a noob question..

3 rotor rotary engine. The one we have now is only 2 rotors.

I guess you're looking for maximum output. You're gonna need a lot of money to do it. If saving the $3.5K for a down payment took time for you, then I suggest you do moderate mods (cost-efficient ones). And for a first-time modifier like you, I highly suggest you take it slow for two reasons: learning curve and thrill. Some of the members here who went all out with their mods at once ended up selling their car in a month.

As for realistic mods, I could suggest these in order:

1. Racing Beat REVi Intake
2. Canzoomer E-manage
3. Racing Beat light flywheel
4. High-flow catback system (any brand available)
5. RP Short shifter kit (to improve quicker shifts)

Anything else outside that realm are either too much $$$ and headache for a beginner or too much $$$ for what you get in improvements.

I am willing to save up some more money...
but how much does the 20B engine cost?
and what numbers does it puts out?
moreover, is it safe with a bone stock 8?

no one has a 20b in a street rx8 my man. Its a racing set only. MANY more mods would have to be done to your car. Listen to the old timers on this forum. dealing with a 350z or an STI is not a problem with the right mods(and you will still have spent less that they did!). Forget the 20B and if you are just starting out in modding cars I would hold off getting the CZ unit. It is a good thing but it does require you to custom tune it to your car. It's not real hard but you may want to learn a little more before you tackle that.

LOL You will never get 400 hp at least not reliable hp if u want that kinda power you should seek a different car btw is ur car manuel or automatic?

If you are going to do the light flywheel, I would also buy Stainless Steel Clutch and Brake Lines.

Full Canzoomer kit would be ~1K bucks, REVi is ~$320, flywheel ~1K installed, high flow cat or catless ~$400, RP shifter ~$240

Total= ~$3k if you do it yourself(cept for flywheel). They would probably charge you ~$200 for the install labor on the rest of the stuff.

Those are all really good mods though(comparatively), your 8 will feel like a whole new person.

Stainless Steel hoses (improves clutch and brake response) would be about $200 depending on whose you buy.

1. RB Revi air intake
2. RB/Other Cat back exhaust
3. SR Motorsports/RP Performance/Canzoomer Hi-flow Cat
4. Canzoomer Piggyback ECU (Although have a good mechanic tune it. Also might looked at a used one that they have here occasionally on the For Sale board.)
5. RB Flywheel (Have to take apart & drop the transmission though)
6. Zex Nitrous w/55 shot jet (Talk to people like Charles R. Hill - Resident RX8 nitrous guru)

Can put the Richard Paul short shifter in anytime. Very easy install.

should i order parts from the US and install it myself or to a garage?

Hell if you live in Canada you might try to hook up with Maurice from Canzoomer. Canzoomer is in Canada. In Edmonton I think. Do know if that is close to you. The cat back exhaust, hi-flow cat, air intake is very easy to install yourself. Stuff like the Canzoomer unit, lightweight flywheel, nitrous I would probably let a professional do it.

and would the stock system be good enough to support the turbo? or would i need new exhaust?

240-260 with the Greddy kit. If you can wait, a better kit might be able to yield 300-ish RWHP. See RX8PR's thread. He was/is right at the ragged edge of 300 and is in the process of upgrading to a better turbo. The Greddy turbo is not really capable of much more than 300 streetable HP as rotarygod predicted.

If you want a full 400 though...umm...wait for racing beat or whoever to release 9:1 rotors, an aluminum intake, upgraded fuel system, better ECU solution, etc. Rebuild engine, attach giant honker of a turbo, etc, Better invest your $3500 in the meantime, because something that drastic will cost more than that.

comedy option: purchase drivetrain out of wrecked GTO, fab up some motor mounts and a custom driveshaft.
