Midpipe suggestions

Hey guys just got a CEL recently and looks like my cat died on me. Im running an 04 gt stock minus my exoticspeed r1-t catback. Id like to replace the stock midpipe with an aftermarket but, id like one with highflow cat so it doesnt throw another CEL. Does any one have any suggestions on a good midpipe obviously hp gain would be nice but i dont want anything thats going to be over the top loud as i already get attention from the exhaust.

kinda pricey when u put the cat on there, and is the second o2 "bung" necessary isnt there 2 o2 sensors on the stock pipe now? Does anyone have experience with the exoticspeed mid pipe? figured since i have the catback the mid pipe might go well with it

If your set on getting a cat converter. Here is another company.

If you can live without a cat, Racing Beat makes a nice one.

i would love to go catless but Cars gonna need inspection and in NY a catless pipe wont pass emissions so id rather not have that trouble down the line. Which is why im trying to see what my cat'd mid pipe options are first

you can:

1. go with the supercat midpipe. Version 1 had issues, version 2 is unknown since it's new
2. have someone local fab up a cat to any midpipe
3. spend some money on the BHR cat and never worry about it again
4. replace your midpipe with a stock new (very expensive) or used (cheaper but there is no way to know how it was treated)

Those would be your options.

Get the BHR and be done with it! you'll spend more money getting any other then will have to switch to the BHR.

does the bhr midpipe throw any cel?

Tweek 10-12-2010 11:21 PM

any midpipe without a cat will always throw a CEL

I called the local mazda dealer and asked the parts guy and she said the pipe would be roughly around 300 new

wow what really? just for the mid piece with the cat?!? yea he was way off but in his defense he asked for my vin and i didnt have it on me

RIWWP 10-13-2010 08:20 PM

Yeah. I saw the warranty bill when the dealer replaced my cat. Parts were $1,430. Parts was just my cat. They reused original hardware and O2 sensor.

So yeah, BHR option is easily less than half, if not a third of OEM.

Some CATs are cheaper, mostly for other cars. Stick an improper cat on a rotary, and it will last about as long as fart in the wind.

Your only cheap option to remain emissions legal, assuming you are past the 80,000 mile mandated warranty (that no one has mentioned yet), is to find a used one that someone is selling on here. More expensive is getting a cat that would work and having it welded to a midpipe so it will work. Best value will end up being BHR's.

i wanna get the bhr so it says i can get a cat and a second second o2 bung should i do tht or just get the for get both of them

trutilldeath 10-13-2010 09:31 PM

RotaryMachineRx 10-13-2010 10:54 PM

You don't need a second O2 bung unless you have aftermarket gauges

Prosk8er735 10-14-2010 05:36 PM

Yea id love to go the BHR route just im a little strapped for cash atm and i can feel this killin the hp on the car and my exhaust is barely audible anymore so i gotta act fast. My car has 87k on it so im past the 80k warranty. I called again to double check and again the dealer said 210 this time actually told him 04 rx8 n i need the mid pipe with the cat. Theres an exoticspeed mid pipe for 440 on ebay n that has the highflow cat ...

Prosk8er735 10-15-2010 03:54 PM

so drove to the dealer and you guys were right showed them the part i need and its 1100 so im ordering the BHR mid pipe right now thanks for the advice guys
