Megan Racing downpipe anyone?

Does anyone have any experience with this midpipe?

http://www.vexmotorsports.com/Megan-...Up_p_8586.html

I searched all over here and couldnt find anything on it except one video on youtube that didnt really display anything. Its looks decently manufactured and Megan racing is a known brand. But for under $200 would this midpipe be worth it?

Its 2.25 inches in diameter and has a resonator... Im just wondering if it would sound raspy because i wanna get rid of my cat this summer. I have an 04 6speed with an HKS Legamax catback btw.. just wondering if this midpipe would add rasp to my exhaust.

Ii got the megan header. Midipe and catback and love the sound. Not raspy on my setup. Just loud at full throttle

almost all midpipes will add rasp with the exception of BHR.

megan makes good exhausts and thats about it from what ive heard. So its not too much of a stretch that their midpipes might be okay.

oh i just noticed.. unless you are turbo, NA applications have no use for a downpipe..

what you are looking for is a midpipe, the two pipes names are not interchangeable.

fyi the ap mid pipe has two resonators and a larger i.d. for about the same price

GK1707 04-30-2012 12:14 PM

Yea Im aware that downpipes are for turbos. But on the megan site and on google they call it a downpipe although it's a midpipe... Weird.

And I've looked at the AP pipe but have hear that eventually the packing blows out and it develops a slight rasp. So I'm wondering since this has a smaller id it might be quieter.. Or atleast have less rasp.

i think most say that any mid will become louder on a rotary except the bhr but idk. the ap i would think is not as loud because it has an extra res in it but i could be talking out my ass

Nomenclature aside the whole pipe costs just as much as a good resonator... Do you really think it's worth it? I'd shop for something better (and more resonators doesn't equal better).

So are you suggesting that i just get a resonator welded in place of my cat. Because I was leaning towards the AP but just wanted to find out more info about the Megan since i havent read much about it on here.

As of right now the BHRs a little pricey for me considering i just did my plugs, coils and wires along with my rear brake pads and i have front rotors and pads that will be going on soon.

So right now its a toss up for me between the Megan and AP midpipes...

Since you clearly don't have enough money to keep up with the maintenance don't waste your money on a shitty midpipe and wait to get a BHR one.

How do i not have enough money to keep up with maintenance? I recently got the car a few months ago and since have had the oil changed, just did ignition and had brake pads installed.. im only changing the brake pads again because i want to upgrade to drilled and slotted rotors and ebc pads all around. As far as im concerned my car is meticulously maintained.

And as far as i was aware adding a midpipe isnt maintenance (getting as new cat might be considered maintenance) but blowing a ton of money on a BHR doesnt mean it will last long than the AP or Megan or even help me gain more power... It just has a better sound (which really is subjective according to what kinda sound you like on your car). I could get the BHR midpipe if i really wanted to but that would eat into my funds for other *upgrades*. Maintenance i have no problem with...

GK, I have the BHR midpipe (one of the first production ones), and will have it back on my 8 within a few weeks once I can get it registered and inspected in PA. I work in NYC and will likely be showing up to some of the NYC area meets. Be happy to let people check it out. It really is worth the money, and no other midpipe is, since the rest of them all fail one way or another. Megans doesn't really have a reputation one way or another, but for that price, I suspect it will fail just like the rest in that price range.

*failing means packing melt, packing blow out, resonator cracking, resonator coming loose, etc...

You can not make more power from a stock sized midpipe than a BHR one. You might break even with one or more of the resonated pipes, but BHRs has no restriction in it, just a rotary-specific spiral resonator that kills the rasp and the drone.

^ Thats great reasoning to lean me towards the BHR.. Sure you don't work for them? Lol jk. BHR was never completely out of the question. I just said it was a little pricey. Which is why I wanted to research more into other midpipes.

I definately will be heading out to the queens meets in a few weeks when my semester over at school. And would love to take a look/hear your BHR in action before I do get a midpipe.

RIWWP 04-30-2012 07:24 PM

Sounds good. No, I don't work for them :) But if they didn't make solid products, I sure as hell would be telling people about it. The simple fact is that I've put >40,000 miles on this pipe with ZERO problems with it. No other pipe can make that claim. None.

My move from RI to the PA place is supposed to be this Friday, Monday, or next Friday. PA registration and inspection happens shortly after,a nd once inspected, the cat comes off and the midpipe goes on (just left the cat on from the engine replacement, took the midpipe off just before the compression test that showed it was failing)

I work in downtown Manhattan, but commute into Jersey City and take PATH in, so that's about the closest my 8 will be getting outside of any southern LI meet.

GK1707 04-30-2012 07:35 PM

Yeah I hear you. I also go to college in midtown so I know, the commute can be a PITA and I'm coming from queens so I couldn't imagine what it's like coming from PA. But I plan on goin out to more than a few meets anyway.

I have another friend local who has an 8 so we'll be hitting the queens meet this summer but we might be headed out to LI too.
