New Magnaflow Cat Back

I had sent an e-mail to Magnaflow about exhaust for the 8.
Thought I could get a free setup if they used my car for prototype.
They indicated that they have allready developed a kit which will be ready to ship in 60 days. I had a Magnaflow on my Mustang Cobra and was very pleased with the sound. I sent back another e-mail requesting any dyno info.

good info

I think magnaflow is more suitable for american cars though

canzoomer 10-25-2003 07:11 PM

Why?

They make very nice freeflow mufflers.
Just make sure you are running a resonator too, or you get that annoying "can of bees" buzz sound.

How does that make a difference? The muffler on the 8 has to flow nearly as much exhaust as on an american V8 (seeing as it has half the volumetric displacement, but nearly twice the RPMs). By the time the exhaust gets to the muffler, the pulse length and amplitude have been so distorted by the piping and the Cat, that it really doesn't matter what muffler is there... the one with the least resistance to flow will yield the best results.

well since most of the japanese exhaust systems in the U.S. are fart pipes we have to settle wit Borla and Maganaflow anyways their awsome

Y'know, this is probably the worst part about the rx-8... it's made in japan... not that that in itself is a bad thing, i mean, japanese cars are great cars... but there is a certain segment of the population that, because it's japanese, wants to put a crappy fart can on the back, a huge wing, and a big air wall in the front. It's just sad man... sad.... Personally, I'd prefer a borla or magnaflow muffler, just so i don't have to get the added restriction of a resonator to make more noise!

I will just agree to disagree with you.

would you rather it was made in ohio than Japan

Efini 8 10-27-2003 07:51 PM

IMHO Magnaflow is crap!

To tell you the truth, it matters to me not one bit where it is made. I just didn't aggree with the comment that Magnaflow is better on american cars. I can't seem to figure out how the exhaust knows where the car was made...

I like magnaflow due to they have 2 or 3 in house dyno's I have been though there place in cali with an employee and he said when they make a new system they dyno the car, if it doesnt make enough power and isnt top quality...they dont sell it, they go back to the drawing boards. They are coming out with a really nice kit for the RX-8 in NOV or DEC, its titanium, light weight. I think it will be at SEMA.

o ya they got some nice highflow cats of cars too.

Just my 2 cents.

I know the VP of Magnoflow and asked him the same thing.

Need a site to here a magnaflow

Closing, double post.

I don't really care who makes the exhaust. The whole idea is to have as free a flow as possible. I have a 4'' downpipe in my wrx, 3'' piping all the way back to a 4'' muffler tip. So what if it farts, my car is fast as hell. The exhaust does its job, no cats, stright through, free flow. It's more free than any cat back i've seen on the 8, because they retain the dual tips. I personally think that is stupid. On v-8's, each bank of cylinders has a seperate exhaust path so it makes sense for the flow. Here they split the flow in half because its coming from a single source, and they have that HUGE can that seperates the paths. That is heavy and it's restricting. If you want to have the best performance gain, get rid of the second tip, and have the piping go straight back, to one side. Thats how you make good power. no restrictions. :D

rotarygod 11-12-2003 01:30 PM

If you want no restriction but don't want to spend much money, try this:

http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/qtec.htm

I had one on my 1st gen RX-7 for a while. Insanely loud when open but it is at the flip of a switch so I could use the stock muffler when I wanted to. Just add it inline somewhere before the muffler.

Turborex 11-12-2003 01:56 PM

You also keep the weight of the stock exhaust though.

Turborex 11-12-2003 01:58 PM

Thats actually a pretty good idea though. :)

1BADZ06 11-12-2003 02:01 PM

I was told the MAGNAFLOW system would weigh about 6-7 pounds. The bad thing was the price was going to be 1400-1600 $$$$$.

New Magnaflow CAT Back system

Hey guys I'm new to all this but had to get involved for my own benifit. I just put the new Catback by magnaflow on my 04 RX-8 along with the B&N Cold Air intake system and felt and heard a difference. I love the lower tones my RX-8 now sings but I will say the local police now know when I decide to move out. The proformance difference is noticed on the mid to upper ranges but none to the lower end.I, being in (as my username suggests) a new area in my life am looking to capture some of my older memories with out spending $5400.00 for a full blown 1000hp as a FT Lauderdale shop claims they cane get me with their supercharger set up. I would like to up grade my off the line proformance and have read the many fourms and for some reason I have not seen any talk on rear gears? Is there none or am I missing them. I have an 04 Automatic, 18" wheels I would think if I lowered the rear gear by about 35 to 50 I could gain the lower end proformance I am looking for without giving up the daily driveability. I know I'll lose top end and gas milage but if I wanted only those let's face it I'd drive a Cion and leave for work an hour early. As you can tell I'm not a tech and make no claimes to being informed any sugestions or direction on the rear gear idea? Thanks
