Looking for A New Intake system
I am looking to upgrade my intake system and would like to know what brand/system is the best. I want a really nice chrome system. I want everything under the hood to be chrome, red & black. Also, will my carbon fiber engine cover fit afterwards.:confused::)

just keep ur stock intake; remove the baffles and vfad and add a drop in filter.
now ur engine cover will fit. :) |
^+1 An intake is only bling, which it sounds like is what you're after. Get the MazdaSpeed one.

I am very happy with my MS CAI. I can actually here the engine now when I step on it.:lol:
I did notice a slight improvment, but that was more than likely because I got new plugs after 50K miles, and had the throttle body cleaned.:lol: |

Just so you know, I have had a K&N TYPHOON intake(didn't like it) and I bought not too long ago the APEXI CAI system and I can tell you that there kit looks fantastic under the hood. I am going to be forced to sell mine seeing I AM GOING turbo with esmerill in July however if there was a way to mod it to keep it I would but take a look at Apexi kit and if interested hit me up in a month or so and I will help you out if I cant keep it.

After I change my cold intake system my car is still going to ride quite right. I am not looking for that loud noise sound I hear with some of the Honda's.

the MS/AEM intake is relatively quiet unless you're at WOT above 5.5k rpms. It'll sound like a rotary, not a honda, unless you stop at autozone and put a fart can on the back.
i love it. now that i have the exhaust on there too, the sound is just gorgeous. if you're not into cars, you might not like it. maybe you should get a chrysler 300 or something. there's lots of simply bling mods you can do for that. your engine cover will fit but look stupid. leave it off. You paid money for an engine cover? |
your car wont sound like a honda with a new intake but it will get louder. besides k&n they're all good sounding. the k&n is retarded loud.

Thanks guys, I decide against the cold intake for now. Very interesting comments I really need to do more research before I make that move to doing anything that may effect my warranty. Thanks again....

Alternatively to what Charles has mentioned you can retain your stock intake airbox, add a K&N flat filter, remove the VFAD and in its place install a Racing Beat Ram intake duct. A nice close to stock improvement and non-warranty infringing.

That is the best choice of all, actually. You can look up the factory airbox mod (which I have had for years, now) as that will bring yu quite close to the effect of an aftermarket intake but it is reversible and not permanent.

Yes, there is a gap Charles, but a fellow member here was kind enough to sell me his VFAD for small money and I cut the 5" or so mating tube piece from it (wanted to keep my own VFAD intact, just in case I wanted to revert to pure stock).
See this link for the cutting/transition; idea unabashedly stolen from Brettus: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-aftermarket-performance-modifications-23/racing-beat-duct-factory-airbox-97962/ The K&N high flow flat filter works beautifully with the stock MAF. It comes pre-oiled (just to trap more particulates) and may be cleaned/re-oiled so effectively a lifetime filter. K&N even provides a placard and call number in case warranty is ever questioned. Enjoy the family reunion! ;) edit: I did run with the gap for a few weeks with no ill effects, but I like having a 'complete' system. Plus it was just slightly louder with the gap. Eliminating the VFAD shutter hesitation was well worth it and overall it's only a little bit louder than the pure-stock, in a good way. The Ram air really does work (just like muscle car 'snorkels' - poor man's FI, especially on cold mornings) and of course it's relatively cooler air than under hood intake.

Huey, is there much of a gap between the factory airbox inlet and the RB duct like there is with the RB box? If so, what do people usually do to bridge that gap? I also wonder how well the K+N works with our MAF sensor, especially given the K+N needs oil (unless they now have a "dry" filter available). Sorry to be so far "behind the curve" but I will be caught up next week with some data gathering to discuss. I am back in MI for family stuff until next Wednesday.

I can't see the oil migrating to the degree that it would foul the MAF sensor. It's a very light coating on the exterior side only. There are oiled, conical, K&N's directly mated to MAF's in many vehicles from Miatas to BMW 3-series with plenty of positive historical tracking.
My daughter just graduated college (although staying one more year to pick up a Masters). Yes, I am THAT old. ;) As you know, savor these days, they are fleeting! :) |
