the limit for the 8

Hi. I have been flying by forums for quite a while, and i found that typically EVEN with a decent tune, the 8 will simply will NOT go insanely fast. Obtaining 300whp can actually be stated as an achievement!

I was just wondering, what kind of limits, i mean what are the biggest numbers you ever saw from an 8. And this does not include the 20b engine swap. Please post what you know. I would like to find out what is the most that can be done to our motor...(im assuming nobody has done the 20b here)...

292whp is the highest ive seen a dyno for...of course there's rumours and claims of much higher numbers

cLLcLe 09-24-2005 11:39 AM

There is a project going on with a guy trying to reach 500+ whp. I think it's under the Major Horsepower board. Seems interesting.

epitrochoid 09-24-2005 02:59 PM

numbers like that are not unobtainable, and there may already be rx8's with that much power. the thing is, that these cars are at most 2 years old, and most of us are still paying on them, and then of course the warranty. getting to those kind of power levels require alot of work to more than just the engine, and few are willing to give up the refined design of the car as a whole for something that's only bearable at a track.

I think the Puerto Ricans have gone into the 300-400whp range.

epitrochoid 09-24-2005 04:36 PM

yeah, but have they shown a dyno? i haven't seen one, so it might as well not exist. you don't more than double the power output of a car on a butt dyno alone

Epitrochoid,

I showed one of our dyno run month ago..............................

Enjoy!

SFR swears there is some one with their kit near or above 400whp

Aseras 09-25-2005 08:41 AM

noone knows yet, the aftermarket is just getting started and people are just getting around the computer. in a couple of years the parts market will get going, and then we'll see. really the only people who have really tweaked and rx8 so far are parts developers and tuners.

We've been waiting 2-3 months just for the dyno that shows the 300whp car they did. :(

^i stop'd waiting

What do you think is insanely fast?

mike1324a 09-25-2005 01:10 PM

when i think insanely fast i think 300mph so yeah the 8 is not gonna do that haha. i dont really care about fast as much as quick.

kride 09-25-2005 01:34 PM

Compilation

I believe someone did build a compilation of all the TC/SC kits out on the market and their individual specs. One should double check that or search for that thread. Last time I came across the thread it was accurate with the info presented around a month ago.

Insanely Fast?

So your definition of insanely fast is time in 1/4, 0-60 and so on? http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_3_108.gif

So possible top speed on 2 mile road track would be of no interest to you say about 140mph. Is that correct? http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18_1_31.gif

mike1324a 09-25-2005 03:46 PM

no. quick and fast are two different things. quick is 0-60, fast is top speed. i care about both, i just care more for quick than fast .

Dragonrider 09-25-2005 11:04 PM

Quick and Fast.

How about quick say from 50 MPH to 130mph for entering the straight away on the road track. Would that interest you as much as the drag strip 0-1/4 mile?

some guy in PR got around 400 whp

Yeah but im guess i care more for quick because i can be quick on the street, but i need a track to go fast legally.

dmorales 09-27-2005 03:21 PM

Truthfully, there is not really a limit, as is with everything pretty much. How much money do you want to spend?

There's already somebody here who says their dropping in $80k to reach 600hp and with that much money I"d say it's definitley possible, of course, some of the 80k is for exterior/interior parts too, but my point remains the same.

if you wanted quick, you should have bought a different car. If you want nimble, refined, and agile, then you picked the right car. We are by no means slow, but yeh, my buddies new mustang could eat my 8 for breakfast without even going full throttle. Find me some good curves and all he'll see is the ass of my 8. Unfortunately, thats the truth..short of playing around with a turbo and risk decreasing the life of your engine or just blowing it up...

That explains the obsession many seem to have regarding the RWHP and the 0 to sixty or 0 to 1/4 mile performance. Since pace car starts begin about 65 to 80 mph, off the line quickness is not a relevant issue in a road race on a grand prix track. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_5_4.gif

Personally I felt it was worth the investment in the racing schools. That way you can drive top speed safe and legal. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_5_3.gif

It does provide a certain sense of confidence to know that one can handle a car that is able to go over 160mph in more conditions than simply in a straight line. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_3_108.gif

So for the record, the RX8 is an insanely fast as a road car. The RX8 needs a very different setup to be nothing but a mussel car (Drag Strip Car).

As I understand it, changing the rear end gear ratio to 4.77 or 5.1 or better with a racing LSD will dramatically increase overall quickness. Does lower the MPG efficiency a bit, but if one wants an economy car they are available.

Many little things when combined will increase the overall performance of the RX8. However, to qualify for import Mazda does have to meet certain minimum efficiency requirements as well as emission standards. Adjusting those import impediments will go a long way to increase the overall performance on the track. All that said, the most important improvement is to us. We need to learn to properly handle such a car.

I have seen the RX8 dragster. It is very fast on the drag strip. Does low 7s. Not the type of car you take on a road trip, but it is on hell of a dragster. Not a RX8 conversion by the way, but a rotary dragster built from the tubular chassis up. About 1500+ hp. For your concept of insanely fast, that is about it. Does well over 200mph in the 1/4.

If you are looking for a 300mph+ car, look to the Bonneville Salt Flats for land speed record.

All one needs to do to build an insanely fast RX8 dragster is a lot of money. I noticed that also seems to be a major complaint. That one cannot turn the RX8 into a high performance car for little to no investment.

Aside from that, the limit on the RX8 is about where your imagination and car handling skills will take you. From the stock out of the box dealer ready 4 door sport car, to a custom built 1500hp track burner dragster, to a road track racer, the limit is up to you. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_5_5.gif

I'm sitting at 240 rwhp right now running 7psi. Check out the article I had a while back in RX Tuner. I'm using the Greddy Turbo Kit. To be honest I don' tsee anything more than that being feasible for reliable street use. My 8 pulls like a freight train, even though it is only 240rwhp. Once the turbo kicks in fully around 3750rpm it's a nice seat pinning excercise all the way up the gear ladder. Hell, even 6th gear has some get up and go. Greddy kit isn't very expensive and is pretty easy to install.

Wow, your back! How many miles on the turbo now?
