Life After Installing an SOHN OMP Adapter
 

It has been over 3000KM (that's about 1800 miles) since I skinned my knuckles installing my OMP Adapter. I also switched to 5W40 synthetic shortly after...

I was very delighted to notice a marked difference in fuel economy. I drive mostly highway and was getting between 450 and 490 KM's on a tank (50 liters). After the install of the OMP Adapter I burned one tank of gas and got 487KM on 49 liters and a second tank 50.5 liters this time and traveled 501 KM before I got around to switching to synthetic. Since switching to synthetic oil I have noticed even more improvement in fuel economy, the last tank of gas I drove 514 KMs on 47 liters of fuel. My driving habits have not changed and although I haven't documented every tank of gas this closely the results have been consistent.

Fuel economy was not my motivation for this mod at the onset, but it is a nice bonus for a car that comes with suicide doors and a healthy thirst for high octane fuel. I wonder if others noticed this same difference after this mod.

I still can't seem to get more than 300km to tank with mostly city driving.
Waiting on BHR and new plugs :) My next purchase is the Sohn, so this is some good news!
However, it won't help me as 1. I also have a heavy right foot, and 2. FI is a sooner possibility than I thought :naughty: (which means I'll probably find my right foot to be a lil heavier... :icon_no2: )

Are you sure your gas mileage increase isn't just from the warmer weather this time of year?

I drive a different car in the winter, the weather has only wamed up slightly since I got on the road this year. It is my first year with the car and have done other mods as well.

I replaced coils, wires and plugs with a BHR Kit and installed the Revi Intake and RB Cold Air Duct in the winter along with a couple of other things that would not change performance before I took her out on the road.

One thing that should actually have a negative impact on gas mileae is that I have been driving a co worker who is over 200 lbs to work the past month and that is why I am so surprised my fuel economy has improved like this.

Another thing that may have relevance is that I did a seafoam treatment before I installed the OMP Adapter and have been premixing my gas since then. I started using 5 oz of 2 cycle oil per tank, after the OMP Adapter was installed and I saw the consumption rate I cut back to 3 oz premix per tank, and have run without premix a couple of times.

The Sohn probably wouldn't give you better gas mileage. Maybe a little. From what I noticed when I switched to synthetic 10w40 and did the Sohn, things didn't change. I think my average MPG went up about 1 with a midpipe, premix, and Sohn. Pretty sure my driving habits didn't change, or maybe they did.

I didn't get enough time with my engine after Seafoam to see if it made a difference or not. I think the (I figured) stock ignition on 40,000 miles was holding a lot back.

Averaging things out, it would seem my mileage has improved by about 10 percent with similar driving habits and conditions. The change was gradual and it was confirmed in my mind that I was definitely getting better fuel efficiency after the described changes, especially with a passenger travelling to work with me every day (130 KM return, that's about 75 miles highway). I have no other explanation since I didn't drive my car (except home from where I bought) until after the BHR Kit was installed.

Maybe I didn't get enough time to get good averages. I took the cat off after about two fill ups. Did the oil after another 4 or 5. Then seafoam 4 or 5 after that. I was getting between high 17 to high 18 for the most part. It was going up though, just slowly.

Something that I did last week..

I accidentally filled the car with regular gas, my mileage results were 470 KM on 50 liters. The type of driving was virtually the same. The car ran fine and I noticed no other difference.

This has nothing to do with 2 cycle oil, however I thought it might be interesting to some of you. I have no intention of using regular gas in the future, first because the savings are small and it's potentially harmful to the cat.

hopefully I get some good results like that.

Aside from the fuel savings, the Sohn OMP Adapter will be an upgrade..

Just be sure to read up on the install while you wait, it has its challenges but with patience and some of the helpful tips by those who have been through it you will manage.

All those above mods should increase mileage (intake, ignition, plugs, wires); but I don't think the sohn has anything to do with it...

Your car was parked for the winter I'm assuming you removed the battery and your PCM reset, meaning the increase in mileage could be from your fuel trims resetting....?

You have to take the battery out to install the omp adapter so that is a valid point..

I noticed slightly better fuel economy after switching to synthetic oil too.

what does a sohn do for the car? can i get a link?

Your car has an oil metering pump or omp, it's job is to inject oil for lubrication into the combustion chamber as part of the rotary design. That is why Mazda recommends that you use 5W20 dyno oil. The Sohn adapter combined with a reservoir allows you to feed 2 cycle directly to the combustion chamber and also makes it safe to use synthetic engine oil. Some feel premixing 2 cycle oil in the gas tank is still beneficial but with the adapter there is no engine oil entering the combustion chamber which is good because it is not designed to burn and can cause carbon buildup.

Since the sohn adapter (20 Months / 9000 miles) my avarage mileage is 18 mpg (I usualy use my car 70% in town and 30% on countryroad, NO highway). Best was 23 mpg on long way.

I hope someone responds to this seeing how the last post on this thread was several months ago. Looking at the link to where to get the adapters I don't know which adapter to get. One says 12A, another says 13BMech, another says 13B Electr, and the last one just says Rx-8. I have no idea what to get. Also once the adapter is installed I noticed it is ok to use synthetic oil. What is the best viscosity to use?

Get the RX-8 one. You don't need the optional adjuster because the OMP does that for you. As for the oil question, yes you can use synthetic. Oil weight is up to you.

Simply choose the adapter for the RX-8.


For the reservoir of the Sohn adapter you can use synthetic 2stroke oil or Idemitsu premix oil! (I use Fuchs Titan 2T 100S)

For the oil pan you can use synthetic oil (I prefer 0w-30 Mobil1)

Just want to make you aware that you'll need to source an Oil Container for the SOHN adapter as well as it does not come with anything to hold the oil.

No I did not know this. Thank you. What did you guys do for this? Just fabricate another reservoir? I'm kinda a novice at DIY work.
