Knight Sports Exhaust
What is that third outlet coming out of the pipe? the one coming out of the middle if its not obvious enough.

I bet it's some form of "noise maker", or a way to bypass the muffler. Not sure I'd want either one, but you've piqued my interest. I've not heard of this brand yet, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. I'm a newbie to car tweaks.

As I recall, this was discussed a while back, and the consensus was that it was a resonant tuning pipe of some sort, to "tune" the tone and volume.
|
that's very strange. it looks like a cutout, but i don't see a valve. if it's just "there" all the exhaust is going to go out that hole instead of through the restrictive muffler.
|
Exactly, path of least resistance and all... I'd love to hear from KS as to what the purpose is :)
|
If it were a cutout, it would have to have some sort of an attachment points on it for the cap, and it wouldn't be chromed. I vote for resonance chamber.
Or maybe, it's a drain clean out point like household pumbing has... way to get rid of all the soot that must accumulate inside of all of our exhausts! :D |
Wow, that is one mutant exhaust!
|
hmm maybe rotarygod or wakeech can enlighten us
|
I also think it is a resonance chamber.

BUT, what is interesting is how the tubing is bent to go around the long way to have a larger radius through the bends (meaning higher maintained velocity, less energy consuming). |
In the mid 20th century some exhaust systems utilized what were know as "exhaust boxes". They were just dead end pipes that led to a muffler like device to help control tone. Usually they were just a single open chamber. Size depended upon what the end goals were. They did do a little for muffling but they are best for just tuning out certain resonances. Knight Sports probably had a very annoying tone at a certain frequency and couldn't get rid of it easily. This is most likely a chamber rather than an outlet. I don't think that any company would market a cutout without some form of blocking it off.

|
Not on this forum I believe.
but if you go on to Japanese sites, TONS of people have that exhaust. |
