K&N Typhoon v.1 vs. K&N Typhoon v.2 vs. Racing Beat REVi

Okay, right now I have a K&N Typhoon v.1 as my intake. I notice slight drops in RPM's at idle. I thought about getting a new intake to maybe fix this issue. K&N redisigned the Typhoon, realizing this was a problem I guess. K&N claims 11 hp gain with the new Typhoon. Racing Beat claims a maximum of 5.8 hp gain with the REVi. Has anyone tried or heard the sound of all of them? Which one do you like best. Which one do you have?

paimon.soror 06-29-2011 12:37 PM

I would upgrade to the Mazda OEM, fantastic product

Jedi54 06-29-2011 12:38 PM

seen them all
heard them all
dyno'd them all.

K&N is garbage

Racing Beat is an exceptional intake, I owned it for years along with the duct and it performed exactly as advertised.
Besides, out of those 3 it's the only real cold air intake.

How does it sound? I notice it doesn't suck in cold air. It sucks in hot engine bay air. I was thinking about doing the REVi with the duct as well. I like the way my K&N sounds and don't want to loose that sound really. Maybe I could find someone with this intake around me and can hear it. I guess sound isn't everything.

Jedi54 06-29-2011 12:50 PM

if you like the sound of the K&N (the loud angry bee noise) then you probably won't like the RB.
it's more subtle but perfectly compliments the motor at higher rpm's where as the K&N (imo) drowns out the motor.

best to find someone near you and hear it.

Fixed spelling error in title.

when i bought my car it had the v1 on it, sounded good put had unsteady idle. i wanted the aem but they are pricy. i picked up a v2 for next to nothing, it still sounds good and idles much better. you wont get any real gains from any intake tho

yes you will.
just not BIG gains.

besides, didn't some polak LOSE hp with the K&N intake?

200.mph 06-29-2011 12:57 PM

sry jedi dont strike me down with the power of the force, jk. what i ment was no noticable hp gains +/-. just mostly for sound and show

sorry, couldn't resist.

it's possible to see up to 5-7 hp gains with the Revi and Duct. I think I've seen people pick up around that much.
One thing I've noticed is the curves look better up top with the RB then OEM. :dunno:

either way, it's great for sound, it's great for feeding more cold air into the motor, and if you pick up a few ponies here and there then that just makes it all that much better.

It's not even a question. K&N is crap. But stock or AEM/MS is just fine too.

Hesselrode 06-29-2011 08:02 PM

I just don't want stock. Maybe revi would be good. Everyone thinks I have exhaust due to my intake. But idle does suck.

If you looked at your intake air temps you would care. If you got on a dyno or lined up to another properly running RX-8 you would care :)

Go Navy.

Rotary-RX8 06-29-2011 09:39 PM

K&N = Hot Air Intake

Revi = Cold Air intake

You choose :)

Hesselrode 06-29-2011 10:20 PM

I am unsure how much horsepower i lose or gain with the HAI, but surely it can't make much difference. Not like I race or anything for money. I am really thinking about switching to revi though.

monchie 06-29-2011 11:18 PM

I voted...

for oem :)

It's not the WHOLE Navy. My intake is OEM.

OP, I voted for RB because OEM wasnt available. Just buy the duct and attach it to the OEM for all the advantages of the RB intake for $300 less...

Having said that, I was young once, and I had a V2 K&N on my first RX-8.:spank: It sounded cool, but there were no gains at all. I didnt notice any negative impacts on how my motor ran, but I wont spend the money to install one a second time.

Hesselrode 06-30-2011 11:33 AM

Yeah, i bought mine with the K&N v.1 Typhoon on it and I have always loved how it sounds, but I knew that it wasn't CAI. Any fool can see that. I really want the REVi. It looks cool inside, but you can't see that. Does the typhoon being short make any difference. and how much air is that big intake tube sucking anyway.

Jedi54 06-30-2011 11:38 AM

the short ram has to have MAF screens in there or the idle is adversely affected.
only way to know 'how much air is that big intake tube sucking' is to measure grams / second using something like an AccessPORT.

 I was an OS aboard the U.S.S. Barry (DDG-52), got out in 1996.

Houston Sooner 07-02-2011 08:46 PM

Got the V2 and it works fine. Funny it seems like all intakes really don't make a difference in the car!

jimstaz 07-03-2011 02:26 PM

why is it that the OEM is supposely better than the aftermarket intakes? what is special about it if someone could be kind enough to explain to me..

slvrmzdrx8 07-04-2011 02:52 AM

So im running the stock airbox right now and i want to upgrade to an new intake. (Upgrade, not downgrade lol) I have a chance right now to get my hands on the Typhoon V2 for a good price, should i jump on it? or should i hold off and save my pennies and buy the AEM CAI later on?

dezau 07-19-2011 12:50 AM

Honestly intake won't give u much hp improvement. listen to them on youtube or find cars with intakes, see which one u like best. I watched a couple and liked the HKS the best. Granted you might even lose 1-2 hp with this, but personally I thought it's worth it. to each his own i guess. :D

da20plt 07-23-2011 12:42 AM

bummer 2 read about the K&N Typhoon v.2 just bought 1. glade i only paid $120 delivered, hope it sounds nice at least.
