K&N Typhoon Intake
 

I just purchased the K&N Typhoon Gen. 2 Intake. Here are some pictures after just unwrapping the pieces today. Everything looks BEAUTIFUL and I'm headed home this weekend to see my 8 and go to the Philly International Auto Show, so hopefully I will get it on then and post some audio and video clips. Can someone tell me if there is anything special I need to do this intake myself? This will be my first performance mod done by myself & I have the detailed instructions in front of me. Hopefully you will have the audio/video sometime this weekend. If I can't get it on, you may have to wait a little.

only thing you will need to do is oil the filter. the instructions are really good in my opinion. i was able to do mine in about an hour(would have been shorter but i had the wrong allen wrenches so i had to borrow someone elses. the instructions are straight forward. only problem is installing the heat shield. its a little cramped and awkward to screw the bolts back in. i think you will like the end result.

Once I get the intake on, is there anything to watch out for that is normal?? I can't remember in reading all the threads if certain smells will be achieved or if it will take some time before the ECU realizes the intake... CEL problems with the K&N??

Weird Question: Where do you put the CARB sticker on the intake??

There is nothing strange to look out for except it being louder. There were no CELs with mine and no crazy smells like an exhaust would produce. Just make sure that every thing is good and tight before you start up the engine. The first start up might be a little strange because the car has to adjust to the increase in air flow into the engine. Thats basically it. Just don't rush, take your time to installl it and you should not have any problems .I put the CARB sticker on the top of the heat shield so that it's visible as soon as you open the hood.

just make sure you remember to take out the little screen out of the stock air box. it says to in the manual but just as a reminder. also be careful when you get an oil change because one time the guy spilt it all over the engine bay and when i went to take apart the intake(traded the car in to get new rx8) i found oil in the tube itself behind the filter. so just watch that it doesnt happen to you. i cant think of anything else right now but if i do ill keep you posted. if u have any questions ill try to help out as best as i can.

I haven't really taken an in depth look at the directions yet, but what is the screen you speak of? Will it be in the box I take out? Or is part I leave in where I just need to take the screen out?

There are some members here who have experienced oil collecting in the accordian tube and also behind the filter. It may not be the guy who put it there.

PSUgreystreet, There are 2 screens inside the stock airbox behind the filter. You are going to have to remove 1 of them and reuse it with your K&N. Let us know how everything turns out

rati i didnt know that was happening to other people. i took the intake off a couple days after the oil change so i figured thats what it was.

Just a heads up. i think mazda has a TSB out for this oil collecting problem in which they remove the tube that goes from the oil filler cap back into the intake and replace it with a tube that goes from the oil filler cap down into each intake runner, Then plugs off the intake tube.

that probably was the problem right there. i dont have to worry about that anymore though because i traded that one in(04 auto) for an 06 mt. the tsb calls for 04s-05s. but thanks for the heads up anyway.

If I put the K&N on and experience this oil collection problem and take it in for the TSB, will they give me crap for having an aftermarket intake on or does that not really matter.

Also about the screen, I am not real familiar with the process because this is my first performance mod done by myself, but will it be self-explanatory when I see it? Just use one of the stock screens behind the K&N filter? Thanks for all the help guys!

When I had a cel light on my car they made me take my RB intake off, and put the old stock one back in (turns out that wasn't the problem). Also, a hint on the K&N, after you oil it, try to leave it out overnight over newspaper to let the excess oil drain off. Sometimes too much oil can lead to problems.

^ Yeah, be careful not to over-oil the filter. It will fowl up your MAF. Also, like Fanman said, let the filter sit overnight, or for a few hours to let the oil soak in and any excess drain off. I even will take a paper towel or a rag or newspaper and blot around the filter to remove any excess oil from the filter.

As far as the oil collecting in the intake tube, I've only experienced this when an idiot either overfilled or filled the oil so fast that it came out of the oil cooler tube and into the intake. This really shouldn't be an issue for you if your oil changes are done properly.

yea i didnt let my filter drain after i oiled it i was just so excited to get it on oops. as for the screen its really easy to take out just follow the directions and its only four screws to remove it and it comes right out.

Thanks guys for everything... So I put the intake on tonight, but I was in a rush to get to the Philly Auto Show and didn't tighten everything down.

To the bad news, in the process, I broke the side nipple off of the cannister that is locked into the hanger on the back of the heat shield. Do you know what I am talking about? The plastic piece snapped off and was inside the hose, so I removed it, but there is no way to reconnect the hose to that side of the cannister. A couple of questions.. Will I have to get a new one from Mazda?? And what exactly is that piece that I broke (looks like a hollow piece of plastic about the size of a huge egg)? Everything else is good to go, but stupid me hit the edge on my engine bay and it snapped off.

This is the piece... Sorry for the poor quality, but it is the piece off the right side in thise picture. It is connected to a hose and the piece broke off so I cannot connect the hose... any clues as to what this piece is when I call Mazda for a replacement?

isnt that like the little vacuum canister thingo?

If it was in the engine then i guess it was important...
see if you can find a temporary fix until you can get a new one from mazda

So I called Mazda & they couldn't give me an exact part name from teh description I was giving them, but we narrowed it down to the Vacuum Canister. The one side is completely in tact, but the one nipple that was the right angle in it is the one that broke. Just the top of the angle broke (as you can see in the pic), so do you think there is a temp. fix for this?? Is my car drivable without this part or is that too dangerous? What if I were to fit the hose over the broken part (I feel like this would only block the hole b/c it's situated to face up and not out). Could I cut the plastic nipple so that the hole is facing straight out and then get a hose to fit over it?

By the way, Mazda said it is going to be 64 (including tax) to replace. A little piece of plastic...

I'm not familiar with this part.. could anyone enlighten me on what it is?

all i know is that my auto didnt have one so its something to do with the manual

That part is called the "Vacuum Chamber". It is part of the VFAD (air intake system). If you have the broken piece why don't you super glue it back together?

^Right, but instead of trying to fix it or going out ang buying a new vacuum cannister. I would just remove the bumper and pull out the VFAD unit. Also, follow the hose from the vacuum cannister to the connection that plugs in after the throttle body and remove that. Then, use something to cover that empty nipple.

Thanks guys, as of right now I re-clamped hosing to the cracked piece (slightly modified), but is very sound. I am headed back to school today, but when I come back home to my 8 again in a month or so, I will take more time to study the problem.
