Just a suggestion to quiet a extremely loud muffler
 

This isn't just for RX-8 enthusiast but all enthusiast who may want to quiet there ride down, its been suggested at sevral forums that i use to be on. Alot of people have used Dynomax mufflers to take out the loudness in there exhaust.

I know from reading that sevral people have the super cat, and mated to a greddy or HKS muffler it can be overwhelming for street use. Look into getting a dynomax universal muffler or mufflers. There cheap, about 30-45 bucks depending where you shop , but the sound will be between really loud and stock. These mufflers usually do the trick to tone things down a bit but still give you a healthy sound at WOT.

But like i said , its just a suggestion...

You could probably throw in Flowmaster with that also, just have to get the CFM flow rates correct.

I think someone recently posted on here that Flowmaster commented they didn't make anything that could withstand the heat from a rotary, though. Was that you?

i read that too... i would also be willing to bet that the dynomax would have the same problems....

Flowmaster doesn't recommend their own mufflers be used on rotaries.

Dynomax makes some good mufflers. I've used their superturbo mufflers and they work fine. They have the only "turbo" style muffler that I would ever consider using. Dynomax and Magnaflow are basically the same company. The supertubo mufflers can be had anywhere from $30 to about $65 or so. I use a Dynomax superturbo on my RX-7.

You can't just use any muffler. The rotary heat will eat up most sound packing in no time at all, even at the very back end of the exhaust. Stainless steel wool is better (regular steel wool won't work), but will also eventually mat down under the heat and get boomy. The only thing that really works long term for rotary engine muffler packing is stainless steel scrubble; thick curley-q machining fines, or lava rock, but eventually they'll succumb to the extreme heat too. A repackable muffler is ideal.

I have yet to see a muffler under $125 that I would even begin to recommend, most are good for this application cost over $200. If you use a cheap one at least set up your piping so you can swap it out easily. I suppose a $50/pop you could consider it disposable and throw a new one in every year
