intakes and turbos
sorry for this noob question, but I just dont know much about working on cars, yet :)
but I have a few questions: If I were to buy an intake like the K&N typhoon v2 or the AEM/MS CAI. would that get in the way of a possible turbo setup? I know they wont give me any more power, I just want the sound. but I dont want to spend my money on one if it wont fit when I decide to actually turbo my 8. plus if you guys can give me some ideas for books to read about working on our cars that would be great!! the more research I do the better :) |
dont waste your money....save for the turbo. I wasted mine on a AEM CAI and now i'm going turbo and its useless. But, I can sell you mine real cheap which might tide you over til you go FI (turbo) its used, but its has everything for installation and it's only got about 700 miles on it. I barely drive my car. It's polished finish. I have pics of it installed if you wanna see. $75 plus shipping.

Most turbo kits don't have the right piping to take advantage of CAI's located where the stock box is, and there's really no reason they should.

is the K&N considered a CAI? would that work with a turbo??

It is considered a CAI I'm PRETTY sure....but its not one that goes to the bottom of the front bumper like the AEM....I have a waterproof sleever on the cone for the AEM so no water gets sucked in.....
no it wouldn't...most turbo come with piping and a filter anyway for positionig for the best airflow...check out the Esmeril kit..(that's what I have) you'll see |

None of the standard CAI's would work with turbo setup. They all go from the cone/front of the device into the intake manifold (directly into the engine). A turbo kit's intake has to go through the turbos, intercoolers, etc and comes from there.
Might be able to use parts of the CAI, but most turbo kits already have intakes that come as part of their kits. However for the Greddy unit, you might want to make something, as the cone/mushroom is right in the engine bay, exposed. |
