I need advice for a new clutch
Hi, i'm about to change the clutch disc on my Rx-8 and i have seen some on eBay and wonder what is the meanning of stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3.
I also wouldlike suggestion in order to purchase a new clutch, i'm not necessaraly looking to save some money but i wouldlike a good and reliable disc, there is nothing better than others experiences. Thank you. |
The "stages" tell you the clamping force of the clutch. In simple words how much power they can hold before they start to slip
Get an exedy stage 1, it's a slight upgrade over the OEM one and is actually cheaper. Depending on you budget\mileage\intentions you may also want to consider a lightweight flywheel at this point. Sure it costs a bit but since you're already taking the transmission down... ;) Oh... and GET YOUR CLUTCH PEDAL WELDED! Instead of buying from ebay you should try one of the vendors here. Pre\after sale communication is part of the service in the end! I belive that BHR still sells the clutches with a reinforced throwout bearing as well. Not a must but definitely a cool little upgrade over the stock one. |

Not true, Giorgio. Each aftermarket manufacturer uses their own criteria when establishing "stages" for clutch kits and there is no industry standard for this.
Clutches deal with both engine torque and heat produced by slippage and they do this by altering both the clamping force of the pressure plate and the materials used on the clutch disc, together. In many cases, the move up by one stage is simply the materials used on the disc face and that does not necessarily equate more torque capacity of the clutch kit. Two things are for sure; the wrong choice in clutches can make for a very "unfun" car to drive and most people specify too much clutch when buying replacements. Please don't spank me! |
I do like bse50's suggestion. I would go with the Exedy Stage 1 clutch, unless you're looking at going with forced induction at some point. The clutch can handle more power than the stock clutch, but they are both very similar. I don't recall the specs of HP capabilities between the Exedy Stage 1 and 2, but stage 1 will handle all NA power mods on the 8 without an issue. I just dropped the Exedy in my car and am completely content with it. The throw-out bearing is definately heavier, making the actual clutch engagement more of an effort. This is why people weld their clutch pedals to avoid the infamous breakage. There are also brackets available. Either way, my dealer wanted almost $800 (that's right) for a new clutch, throw-out bearing, and pressure plate. I purchased my Exedy for $250 with all of the above items. It also came with a nifty little alignment tool to aid you in installation. DO IT!!!

I was searching on eBay for a new clutch too....everyone says go with exedy stage 1. I want to replace flywheel too. They have a deal on there for $700. That's a bit out of my price range. I did see a gripforce F1 stage 1 with flywheel for $318. You also have to buy the balance thing for flywheel. It's an extra $109.
