Humor Me, What's This Transmission Noise?
Throw out bearing. That's my answer.
It happens (or I only hear it during) when I'm in too high a gear for the speed I drive at. Goes away when I step into the clutch...switch gears, try to save MGP etc. It's a fairly obvious metallic whir. Ok. Post it up. Wait, I know what you want. 04 Rx8 6 speed manual. Fidanza flywheel, ACT counterweight, Spec Stage 1 Clutch. Lithium grease on input shaft spline plus slave fork and throwout bearing. New throw out and pilot bearing lubed with said lithium grease. Talk. Why do I only post when I should be out partying? I'm young...but care more about my car at these times...damn. |
Does it almost sound like a fan or something that is rotating hitting something stationary? I only ask because i've been experiencing a mysterious noise for a while and can't figure it out either. Are you sure its coming from the trany?

... Goes away when I step into the clutch I would lean more towards pilot or input shaft bearing. Did this occur right after the pilot bearing (and everything else) was installed? What did you use to press the bearing in with and is there any chance the end was crushed/deformed where it could affect the needle bearings? And just for further information in case I'm wrong (always possible), how much pedal play do you have? Should be 1/4"-1/2". |
i have the same problem. changed my oem to act clutch pad, pressure plate, release bearing but the still have my oem throwout bearing.
just changed the clutch (at a shop), every time i press the clutch pedal i here a noise like a helicopter but very very low volume. i goes away when a gear is engaged. also during the actual engagement, when i am letting the clutch go and pressing gas to engage the noise gets worse. the clutch has less then 5 miles on it. please help. the shop is saying thats just normal transmission noise but i do not believe them. |
