home made exhaust
for what its worth....i made my own exhaust for my 8 ( OK my brother did ). he used the factory muf, cutting it open to remove the silencers inside. then he welded a t in the inlet and straight pipes to both outlets. once that was done he rewrapped it with a thin peace of sheet metal so it could still use the factory hangers. as god as my witness it sounds awesome!!!!! none of the aftermarket exhaust systems that iv heard even come close to the sound of a straight piped one, it even pops like a f1 car between shifts (with a flame)
but you guys can pay 500 to 700 for 2 hp if you want, me, ill turn heads for pennies any day! if you are interested and live in the Austin or Houston area, more can be made!!!!! :D |
sound clip would be nice :D
so your going to taunt everyone with your "Jesse James" exhaust and not post pics or sound bytes...that sux...

How Loud ?
Is it way too loud (ricer loud), or racing beat loud?
maybe you could get your brother to hack into the ecu and rip some crap out! jk! ;)
I did this with my stock exhaust, before going with the B&B and then eventually with my current Greddy cat-back. We hollowed out the interior of it and it just sounded ricey. Sounded extremely high-pitched.
sound is nice
yah the racing beat i have sounds like a mustang like its running lean.. i love the noise BB is to ricey for me
sorry about not having sound!!!! i will try and work something out soon. as for a pick, it looks just like a factory system. and its stright pipes...not a hollowed muf. i dont think you could use the word ricey to discribe the way it sounds at all. ill get a sound clip or video of it by next week.
dam gotta hear it...anyone have a link to a video or sound clip of someones 8 with a straight pipe?
OK a straight piped rotary = too loud for many peoples taste. Personally if I spend this much on a car whats the big deal of buying a $600+ exhaust for it? Just my $.02
absolutly nothing at all! im a poor ass white boy with very little in the budget for a car that is my budget...... i just really like the way it sounds! not eardrum imploding but just mean enough to scare the crap out of the 350 next to you at the light . . bra ha ha im working on the sound clip!!!!
the car still has a cat and a big resinator on it . its not all the way straight pipes.
i hate when people say "just my 0.02 cents"....
Well I hate when people comment on something that has absolutly nothing to do with the topic... stick to the thread, it makes life easier.
^ lol
yeah post up some clips! :) |

Actually this may be a little loud but ironically it seems that alot of the muffling on the RX-8 doesn't come from the main muffler but rather the cat and midpipe section. Yes, I know the muffler is important too! If he installed a nonresonated midpipe, it would probably be unbearable. Did you just install a "T" in the muffler or is it a gradual merge that bends? If it is just a simple sharp T shape, there will be alot of flow loss through it. A gradual merge collector would be better for flow. |
i guess i should have used the letter Y in my discription......ooooops:D
Sound Clip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :d
ok>>>>>>>>>>finally .......i have a vid of me doing some nutz and you can here the exhaust perfectly. but i still need to get it from the cam to the comp:( a few more days......I hope
Nice going, mspeed11! Homegrown is tha way to go! Mad respect! :D
Booyakasha!!
its on a vid tape......little one. can you still get it on here without the software for the cam to put on your comp?????? please say yes and it will be in the mail in about 2sec's
Why not just remove the muffler and fab up a straight pipe? It wouldnt cost that much for the connectors and you could sell the muffler or put it back on if you ever needed to rather than ruining it.
Someone here did just that. They just removed te muffler entirely and installed a tip that dumped out under the car. This would be very loud and only good for about 4 hp. By using even a hollowed out stock muffler, he probably picked up a horsepower or 2 but it probably isn't unbearably loud. Then again, maybe it is.
The way I understood it he ran straight pipes through the muffler, which in essence wouldn't make it much quieter than just straight piping it.
sound clip?!?!?!?!
sound is coming? and i used the stock muf so i could use the hagers that it already has. and it looks stock from the back.........wtf was that a 20b?!?!?!:D
MSPEED11, do you live in canyon creek off 620? I think I have seen your car, if that is yours in the picture. A lowered silver 8? Only one like it I have seen in Austin.
yes thats me:D ill have a good vid of my car before and after blk wheels on here in a few days. well it will be next week before they get pwder cted so im guessing the end of next week or the begining of the folowing week. do you drift or anything like that? if so im gathering a few people to go cut it up......let me know.
...Bump..........
Not exactly home made, but not exactly brand name either, anyone seen this before
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7929885074 seller says "we have it custom made for us in the us. sound is very quiet bacause of the dual muffler." |
MSpeed11--have you been able to get a sound clip? Some friends offered to install my greddy exhaust when it came in, but it didn't make it in time so we took off the stock for fun and to see the sound. THE SOUND IS AWESOME! Now I'm considering returning the greddy and doing something similar to you, a straight pipe into a Y with tips for good looks. The sound is extremely loud in the car though, that's the only problem. Does having the Y make it less loud inside?

Some kid I met down in Ventura,CA
That's cool, but I wonder how loud it is on the inside of the car.
stupid loud
he says you can't even talk to the person in the front seat at freeway speeds |
Still? Just to make sure I understand: he has the Y pipe and it's stupid loud?
The photo is dark but you can tell there is no Y pipe. That is just a cheap tip connected to the pipe from the cat. That is about as straight of an exhaust you can get.
He threw the bent tip on there to direct the exhaust downward. He just hacksawed it off and put the tip on it. Kind of dumb because now he doesn't even have the stock exhaust...I guess he could weld it back on.
Not the route to go. The only thing he has to muffle the sound is the stock cat and resonator. |
Well we took off the stock exhaust and set it aside. It was suggested to have a tip welded on to point it downward, but I know that won't help any. I'm wondering if having a custom y pipe out the back end will muffle the sound any, or simply displace it.
My car kinda has the same setup as mspeed11. Its a straight pipe back from the cat, it goes into a Y into the dual exhaust, without the muffler cans. I don't know if I explained that correctly, but it sounds awesome everybody I know says it sounds awesome.
my own experience is that it sounds earsplitting
i tried the same thing cutting the inside of the muff. but instead did this
i call it 37 exhaust (30 min. $7) http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...h_CIMG0489.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...h_CIMG0488.jpg |
wtf?
too loud for me and I pr0obably more tolerant of this than most people, I have done it on reciprocating engines many times, but tried it on the RX-8 and ordered a small muffler shortly thereafter
used to have some pics on here of my original straightpipe, can't seem to find them now |

my plans are to remove the stock muffler, cut the flange off of the exhaust and the muffler, and have an adapter made for the outside diameter of the stock piping, that way you could reinstall the stock muffler by loosening some bolts and popping some hangers off. the reasioning for this was to have an exhaust shop fab up either a brand name muffler, or a glasspack/cherry bomb of sorts or possibly a straight pipe if you felt in necessary (which I do) and if your state requires a yearly inspection (West Virgina) then you could switch the 2 out before heading to the inspection station and have your possible extra power, and your good sound, along with being legal :)
