home brew single side exhaust - now with video
 

For those that don't read the Competition forum but may be interested in alternative exhaust ideas...

We installed a single side exhaust system on my car yesterday based on the system that ULLOSE posted about a few weeks ago. Thanks to Jason for reminding us that simple problems usually only need simple solutions.

The only substantial difference between his and ours was that I also picked up a used OE midpipe to cut up. This way, I still have the entire stock exhaust that I can bolt right back up when I eventually sell the car if it doesn't go to an autocrosser (thanks for that suggestion go to TeamRX8). A minor difference was that our hanger wire is welded to the muffler under the exit pipe instead of above it. :eek:

The main goal of the system is light weight, without becoming too loud for daily use, at low cost. Add $50 for the extra midpipe (got mine from mazmart) to the parts list in the other thread and about $4 each for wire rod and paint and we're still well under $250 for a system that probably saves about 20 pounds. (Any power gain or loss is unknown...betwen difficulty with my GTech and weather, back to back testing wasn't possible yesterday).

It's far from the prettiest thing, but it's meant more for go than for show. ;)

Cool. I like the weight savings idea; it seems like dual outlets really aren't necessary anyway. Let us know what the seat-of-the-pants assessment is.

It's not that the dual outlets are unnecessary (which they are), it's that the OE muffler is kind of heavy. The weight difference ~20 pounds isn't enough to be noticeable from the driver's seat, but if it helps me shave even the slightest amount of time from an autocross course, I'm a happy guy (even if I won't actually be able to tell if it did or not). The increased volume will help me figure out what I'm doing with the throttle when I review in car video after events.

In street driving, it definately sounds louder, but it's not oud enough to bother me. The note is low and crisp. There does seem to be a little bit of droning at specific revs with specific throttle openings, but they are so narrow that you don't realize that it's there until you've already passed through it.

Overall, I like it so far.

Hmm so basically you put in a new exhaust & muffler, and left off one of the exhaust tips right? So the weight savings is due to a lighter muffler and a deleted 2nd tip.

I've had a wacky idea to even further...remove the catback, and then just come out the side under the suicide door with a muffler/exhaust tip combo, maybe a Supertrapp. I figure it would be the lightest exhaust possible (assuming you keep a cat or midpipe of course), it would be pretty cheap for the muffler itself, the muffler serves as an exhaust tip, it's tuneable for noise, and it would be stupidly simple for a muffler shop to fab up. Plus side exhausts are cool, even if they're only on one side of the car...uhh right? ;)

Ground clearance might be a problem, but for something you only use for autocrossing maybe it would be ok? Unless it bumped you into a more competitive class, then there wouldn't be any point.

The Borla unit weighs a whole lot less than the OE muffler. WRT your idea, TeamRX8 has already done it...sans muffler. Just a little bit of extra pipe welded to the end of the midpipe with a turndown at the end. Ask him how he likes it...but yell when you do it...and use sign language. Not sure if he can hear any more. ;)

well that was a temporary measure, I plan to put a lightweight resonator on it which is probably easier for me to get away with than most because it's not a daily driver, my actual street mileage will be minimal fun only kind of stuff

I don't think there's any reason to use oval tube, there is plenty of room in the factory exhaust path areas for any appropriate size tubing

I agree with that for any standard layout but the concern was that for a side exit out before the rear wheel, a little more clearance might be necessary.

Just wanted to ask, maybe it'll be a good idea. Since you all just doing a single exhaust, have you all thought abt. bringing the exhaust outlet down to the center where the rotary symbol is located, it'll make it look like a porsche' exhaust :)

Very cool. These race cars basically have a race pipe from the engine straight out the back but maybe you could accommodate your idea with a smaller muffler???? Did you consider that type configuration below???
