HKS Twin Power Ignition Amplifier vs hotter sparkplugs
 

For a NA RX-8, I was wondering if anybody had the HKS Twin Power Ignition Amplifier and thought it worked?

I also was wondering what people think about going to a hotter spark plug vs getting the HKS Twin Power Ignition Amplifier? I took my spark plugs out and after looking at them, I think I could go a little hotter. However, I'm just wondering what others think about this issue.

I think in the other thread someone mentioned upgrading the coils>hks twin power

Mazda has a 1-step *hotter* plug. but you can only get them thru a Mazda dealer.

N3Y9-18-110/000018N3Y9 , which is NGK RE6C-L, about 36 bucks from our forum vendor.

RE7C-L is what most stock engine comes with, you can get it anywhere online for about 20 bucks

I have it on my car. Makes idle a little smoother, acceleration a bit smoother as well. No noticeable added power, but even if it gave a few hp, no way it would be measureable. I know Okada makes an upgraded coil, but a set is somewhere in the range of $700, and the only vendor I know that sells it is Vivid, so god knows when/if you would actually get them.

Why would you want to go with hotter plugs ? Wouldn't you increase your chance of detonation with this engine ?

As a general rule, hotter plugs can lead to detonation. However, it depends on the car and the condition of your spark plugs. You can go hotter, if the spark plugs show you can and it all depends on the car.

Oddly, NGK seems to endorse using an ignition amplifier in certain cases. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons.

Those Okada coils are ridiculously expensive and I don't see the gain over stock coils, unless you are racing and going all out by upgrading any parts that you can. I think many people would be better off replacing the stock coils when they replace their spark plugs.

Have the hotter plugs too. Wife just putt putt putt's around all day & the hotter plug resists fouling more. I jump into it on weekends & clean it out if you know what i mean...........:rolleyes:

What's the point of a hotter plug ? Other than to reduce fouling & maybe a few hp ? It's just not worth the risk that you maybe putting on your car. Especially this car, where some people have had detonation issues even with regular tune. Better off getting other performance equipment.
