Just thought I'd throw this up in here, but if somehow there is anyone out there like me who wants to keep things OEM per-say such as using the OEM ignition wires on the LS2 coil here is what I did to make the wires fit the LS2 coil.

Um, you don't want to use OEM wires with LS coils.

what's the difference? and plus these wires are OEM fit but they are NGK wires.

Those are likely 8mm wires, the LS coils (depending on which ones you have) draw anywhere from 8-10 amps per coil. An 8mm wire is roughly a 20 gauge wire and the LS coil wires are typically a 16 gauge IIRC.

Edit: Just looked it up, most quality LS spark plugs wires are 10.4MM

the coils I have are d585 coils, the whole problem was that I found out that OEM wires wouldn't fit the d585 coil until after I ordered the new wires. I originally thought that they did which is why I went ordered them

so what would be the worst that could happen? I'm guessing the wires would melt after the first drive?


in the description of the ngk wire set, it does say that they are supposed to out preform OEM wires, don't know how true that is tho.

Could be fine, could cause issues, Only one way to find out. I never saw the point of home brew kits, more hassle than it's worth.

there is only one way to find out, as long as you think no major damage will be done then I'll try it out I'll just watch it really close the first few weeks. pull the wires and check to see if any damage to them has happened.

I do like to make things, the BHR kit is to expensive for my taste so I just figured I could do the same for less money and build it how I want it.

You will know when it stops working or you suffer from misfires. Hopefully it does not do any real damage. But it's not magic, if the amps are too much for the wire then you will almost certainly have issues. There is a reason there are different gauges of wires based on AMP load.

So you are putting an adapter in the wire end to conform to the small LS type coil connector?

All I am going to say.......Rotaries do not like misfires......trying to save $50 on retrofitting the wrong wires to fit the LS coils is very poor economy if you loose the engine because of it won't make any sense

Wires are cheap...even custom made "fancy" ones are less than $100

Why take the chance?

its a gamble I know, but what if it works fine in terms of misfires. I had used copper to ensure the best conductivity, and they snap in tight around the coil core. If I notice misfires out the wazoo then I definitely wont't run on them.


I guess I could go to the junk yard and find some GM wires in good shape. I just don't want the GM wires to be stupid long. Just clean looking ignition system with the perfect length of wire.

I guess at that expense I would just have to end up making my own wires.

That's a really strange thing to put your confidence in. I'm one of the only people that actually tried doing exactly what you're doing and it works, but the performance is NOTHING like a set of quality wires. I only meant it as a test, and it showed me that the OEM wire ends are terrible even when modified for the standard coil ends. You won't experience any complete failures given that the connection is secure, but the type and current capacity of the wire does have a significant effect on the spark quality.

The wires I use now were $75 shipped and cut to length (it was the most expensive individual component) with gold plated contacts. They're much higher quality than the OEM and NGK original versions. BHR sells theirs individually now, as does BennetBuilt and someone else.

that's what I will end up doing, since I took the time to craft each adapter I'll just use them for a little bit to see how it holds up. I won't have them on to long before I get good wires and do what 9k says to have some that are 16 guage. lol it did take a good 4 hours to make those little things though. I thought it'd be a cool experiment.


Edit: I sent magnecor an email for an estimate on custom wires, I don't need them immediately, for my car is in the shop atm.

Thats whats up. I am going to do this as well. Where do you get the wires from. I see the jumper hanress for the LS2 coils are 4 wire and the rx8 is 3 wire hall effect. Where does the 4th wire go?

Lol, figure it out yourself, or don't attempt it. Most people do this with no reasearch and either get very lucky or it doesn't work right.

hey 9k, not saying that you're wrong in anyway. I just thought that I'd bring this up, but there are a lot of yukon wires out there that are 8mm to 8.5mm. I've seen OEM yukon wires that are 8mm and also msd has 8.5mm wires for yukons.

you can buy a professionally built plug & play RX8/LS2 coil wiring harness on ebay for $70 shipped

BennettBuilt sells MSD 8.5mm RX8/LS2 coil wires for $75/set, an RX8/LS2 bracket mounting kit for $75, the plug & play wiring harness for $75, or you can also just buy the whole plug & play LS2 ignition kit for $375 from them too

I have the harness, d585 coils, new plugs, I am building my own kit. What 9k was saying in previous posts was that the LS2 coils require 10mm ignition wires. So I was simply asking 9k what he thinks of me seeing some OEM yukon wires that are 8mm.

If the LS2 coils absolutely need 10mm ignition wires then I am going to have magnecor make some custom wires with all the right connects and all in 10mm.

10mm is the size of the conductor+insulation. On effective wires the diameter doesn't matter.

The prefered conductor type is wirewrapped, rather than carbon coated as it can be had at significantly lower resistances with less EMF.

To put everyone's mind at easy, I have decided to make my own wires. I will be following this thread ( https://www.rx8club.com/series-ii-di...-wires-231080/ ) to the T. After thinking and more thinking and taking into consideration of what everyone was saying about the original modification I figure if I am going to do this then I better do it right.

here is my setup of how I did my new coils. All I did was follow the last few posts of the first page of this thread. Except I didn't mount my coils to the factory bracket. I made 3 individual brackets coming off the coils themselves and used the factory bolt holes to mount them. I wish I had a pic of the final product out of the car but I was eager to get the thing in and get the car running. The cars runs phenomenally with the exception of the new engine
