Help!! Advice on buying a Turbo kit

Hello All,

New to the site and I need some help. I got my '04 8 about a year ago and I've done a few minor things to it like a GReddy SP2 cat-back exhaust and an AEM intake.

My question is which turbo kit would you guys reccomend? I drive the car every day and I would like to get it installed in a weekend if possible. I've been looking at the GReddy kits.

Where could I get it the cheapest?

Are they hard to install?

Do they need some kind of tuning after installation?

Is this something I can do myself or should I have someone do it?

Again I am new to this whole thing. I have always just driven cars to get where I want to go but after getting this car I realized that I want to have fun while driving and why not go faster for more fun.

Any help would be awesome.
Thanks,
Chris

If you feel like jumping into the darkside...it will not be a cheap endeavor....as far as kits go, I decided to go with the Esmeril kit with the interceptor-x upgrade, yes it is recommended to get dyno tuning, however with the maps Chris provides you dont HAVE to but why wouldn't you.

The thing I've always viewed as most important is a kit that spools up quickly and isn't laggy, but I've never owned a turbocharged car, hoping to soon though....

The kit that looks the best on the dyno I think is the Greddy kit w/ the MazdaManiac upgrade.

supercharger is nice for drifting purposes due to the linear power increase

i think mazsports is good for daily driving in helping keep mpg close to stock at low rpms

mm greddy is awsome for power in the low range . (and possibly better for drag and short acceleration?)

Be warned that having a FI RX-8 isn't all fun and games. You really need to keep an eye on things, or your engine will be blown up in no time flat.

For example, just recently I added T fitting into my boost only line from the turbo. I removed the passenger side wheel to make sure I was getting the turbo side and not the wastegate side of the vacuum line. I use zip ties to secure the vacuum hose, and sure enough, the zip ties ate into the silicone hose (This isn't the cheap stuff either). A few more weeks or months without checking up on it might have resulted with the hose coming off the turbo, and the wastegate not getting signal = dead engine.

Here's a pic .. I pulled the vacuum hose off, it wasn't ripped in half earlier, but you can see how much the hose was cracked.

putting a turbo on the 8 requires a lot of research. i am reading two 300 page books on tuning and the process and upkeep of turbo'ing a car.

^^^ yup, it's not just a 'get it and forget it' type of mod.
Ask yourself the following question:

- how much am I willing to spend?
- will I have the discipline to check the car from time to time?
- do I know enough about cars to properly monitor readouts (boost , AFR, etc)
- What are my goals for HP? (Max hp, track car, etc)

Here is the thing. I am kinda new to the whole F/I thing.

-I was looking to do my homework while I saved enough money for what I find.
-I will definatly have the discipline to check it. I would proly spend more time doing that than anything else.
-I think I know enough about cars to properly maintain a turbo 8.
- I'm looking for more like a hobby. I'm not too interested in going to the track or racing it. I just want to get up fast and enjoy it. Nothing too special.

All that being said Which one in you guys opinion would be a reasonable comprimise between all these factors - Price, Ease of maintenance, Need for more upgrades. I guess what I really would like to know is can I just buy the Greddy kit and be good (happy with the results and safe for the car)?

Bottom line is this crap is addicting. and these little bolt ons that I am buying doesn't cut it.

Thanks for listening and all the input. You guys are awesome!!!

from the sound of it, the most information, the widest availability, and the most active support and surprisingly the cheapest is the MM + greddy. start saving, to about 6k, u'll need the AP too.

Look at Speed force racing except don't buy their ECU get the Interceptor-X instead most important make sure you find a good shop who knows something about Rotary engines and turbo setups.

I'm in a similar situation as the original poster, but through searching this site and reading the input from the posters of said threads, I am going to go in the way of MM's Greddy Upgrade. The guy knows his stuff and post on here regularly.

Also, I have read about concerns with emissions, and MM stated that the Greddy E-Manage Ultimate can be configured to pass emissions, which I will need as well.
