Headers
 
ok, so i just got back from a 12 month deployment in afghanistan and now its time to start playing with my 04 rx8, im looking to buy some headers but i really have no idea what to get, so if you guys could make some suggestions that would be awesome and much appreciated. thanks guys

forgot to say im really not too worried about HP gain with the headers im looking for the sound haha, i have the Greddy sp2 exhaust on the car now along with an AEM cold air intake , looking at headers and test pipes to kick the sound up a little bit on the car

Forget the header ... test pipe alone will probably get you the sound you are looking for.

The ideal header for power is a long tube header. Nothing on the market right now.

RB is nice for a nice price, it adds a bit of sound. its the best performance header short of a long tube like highway is saying. gains are minimal, probably like 1HP but if you go nitrous or SC, it is nice to have a stainless header than cast.

I would suggest you run two race mufflers. One under the transmission and the other under the rear of the car. Any race muffler such as Flowmaster, Borla, Dynomax or Gibson will work. Have them welded in at your local midas or muffler shop. SummitRacing.com or Jegs has huge selection and the best pricing.

WRT headers----expensive. I've owned dozens. All custom. All expensive. Over a grand per set. Save your money. Buy race mufflers. Budget for $250 ea. in Stainless.

hmm well i'll probably just forget the headers then and save some money, so on the test pipe any suggestions where i can get one for a decent price, also is the test pipe something i can throw on there myself fairly easily?, thanks for the suggestions and help guys

If you want to go the least expensive route, do the entire exhaust in aluminized mild steel. This is a coated mild steel. All the NASCAR boys use it. Pretty common stuff. But two mufflers (I can help you with this if you want----fitment is the issues) and take them to midas. Bag your cat converter. They would probably work them up for under $250. You could get away with Stainless mufflers for $250 total (not each---my bad). We have fit Borla XR-1's to the car without fitment issue. You'll need a small round one for near the trans and then something much bigger under the rear of the car. This would be a single exhaust system. I think you'd find the results appealing (unless your wife hates loud cars).

someone should really design some long tube headers for our car... even if you had to extend it past stock location and make a custom mid pipe

4 people have that I know of. I'm one of them. They are very costly and there is ZERO market for these things. Before I tell you about the COST (not price), ask yourself what you would spend. Got it. Don't read unless you have a budget. OK, ready. More info for you.

First off you'll need a 3 flanges that transitions from the rectangle exhaust ports to a round diameter primary runner. If these items are built properly they are nice smooth transitions from rectangle to round. These will need to be stainless. Next are 3 primary runners that have to be fitted to a motor along with a right side motor mount. Here is the fabrication time and effort to (a) make these fit and (b) make them near equal length and/or not have huge bends. These 3 primary runners should be made of stainless and are each built using individual J-bend piece pipes of various radious, Donuts and straight pipes. Lots of bending and fitting. Next comes the expensive part: the collector. the best collector we have cost us......$700. Cost. Do we think your over budget yet? Twelve hundred bucks cost with no markup for profit. Call it fifteen hundred. You can buy a set from Howerton in Indy that SpeedSource used on their 2 rotor program for 2,400. There you go. Oh, I forgot the SS O2 bungs and the rest of the custom exhaust to the back of the car. Add peformance mufflers at $300 each x 2 and more stainless exhaust tubing plus labor: $3K for an exhaust system.

Sounds like buying an exhaust for my old 02 M3... But if the gain was worth the cost, some of us would spend the money.
