First Modification

I've been doing some searching and I was looking to invest in a cobbAccess tuner and a cat-delete pipe to gain some horse. I have a few questions

-first is it worth spending the extra 100 bucks to get the Custom Calibration Service with the access port or is the pre downloaded flashes good enough

-second what cat-delete pipe should i get i don't care about sound level or if it passes smog control I was looking at a Agency Power Cat Delete Race Pipe but i heard the resonators packing melts

-third I know the k&N intakes increase hp but wouldn't the stock box with a K&N filter gain the same horse as the intake please explain

thanks for your help

The sole reason to get the AP is to be able to tune your car for the mods you have. No stock tune will ever be as good as getting an actual tune done. I'm sure there has to be more people that just MM that can tune via the access port, but maybe not since he still gets tons of business.

Go with the BHR midpipe if your worried about the packing melting(or whatever it does) in the agency power one. You just have to pay more for it.

Thanks xexok for your advice any ideas on my third question im just curious about it

first: yes it is definitely worth the extra cash to get a custom tune from MM.

second: I would suggest bhr or rb dual resonated as most of the others have a drone to them, not even talking about noise level just a background humming drone that is quite irritating.

third: the K&N for our car really doesnt increase hp, in fact it arguably decreases hp because what it effectively does is suck in the hot air from the engine bay. The stock system is very well designed by mazda and you will be hard pressed to gain much hp with a "good" system (AEM, Mazdaspeed, racingbeat). I would suggest going with a K&N drop in filter unless you dont care to spend 300 dollars on an AEM system.

mscamp02 I know about the hot air from the engine bay coming in with the K&N intake but what about a K&N drop in filter is there any gains in hp there considering that the stock box is closed off to the engine and hot air wont seep in unlike the intake:dunno:

also Racing beat has two different cat-deletes is there any real hp differences between the two or are they the same just one has resonators?

you should read, all these subjects have been covered dozen of times.

xexok 03-12-2011 05:31 PM

They should be the exact same, except for the resonators. The one with them will be much quieter than the one without.

Also I was going to also suggest the k&n drop in filter. If anything it would just allow for more air flow than the stock filter. I'm not sure if anyones ever tested it but that should be the case anyway.

The only aftermarket intakes to even consider would be ones that put the filter near where the stock one picks up air. Getting the k&n typhoon or whatever one is inside the engine bay would more than likely reduce hp than give you any gains. I would still just go with the drop in.

Stock filter is better than the K&N.....not much sense in going there....

They use the stock filters in some of the Grand Am cars if that tells you anything :)

Midpipe is fine as long as you don't have to pass emissions..and don't mind the extra pollution from no CAT

AP with a tune gives you decent gains for the money on this car...where HP gains are rare from any mods. MM seems to be trying to address the waits for his tuning service.....and for $100 you can't beat the price to get a tune done

the drop in filter should allow for better airflow than the normal filter, resulting in minimal hp gains.

As far as the midpips, yes they will offer a hp increase (actually one of the best for the rx8 without using forced induction) however you must realize that this will not gain 20+ hp like other cars, you are looking at only a minimal gain once again and should be about the same difference between the two pipes. The Dual Rez pipe will offer a much lower and more tolerable sound without drone FYI.

Regardless of what intake you get the gains will be minimal. I have the MS CAI and it ddnt make any huge gains. If I was you I'd get the drop in filter and use the money u save to pay for a tuning service with the ap. Also I have the) DR midpipe. The difference between the 2 is the resonators. I like it because it isn't too loud when cruzing around but gives off a great tone when you lay down the gas.

Thank you everyone for answering my questions to the best of your abilities ill keep your advice in mind when buying my parts

9kBeep 03-13-2011 04:32 PM

what a lot of people are doing with their intakes is leave it stock (or put the K&N drop filter in) then remove the air flow ducts inside the box itself, if you are feeling risky you can pull a screen out as well. should give you a nicer intake sound, then buy the racing beat ram air duct and connect that to your stock air box, that would probably be your most practical/ bst set up in my opinion.

xexok 03-14-2011 09:32 PM

I removed the little air flow ducts in mine and have not had any issues. Theres multiple threads that talk about it so do a search and it should come up. I would leave the screen though.

So, is it $495 for the AP and then $100 more for the 6 month custom tune? I PM'ed Jeff about a week and a half ago but he has not replied.

xpingux 03-31-2011 08:58 AM

He's pretty busy and if you go to his website, it's right there on the accessport page.
