Is this even worth it?

"Gold Reflective Film

Now On Sale!

The Gold Reflective Film is an aerospace material capable of reflecting 78% of all radiant heat with continuous operating temperatures of 450 degrees centigrade. The material is metalized polyamide polymer laminated glass cloth with a high temperature pressure sensitive adhesive. The film is lightweight at only 5oz per square yard, and is easy to apply and remove. Typical applications include; but are not limited to, engine covers, side pods, suspension, under trays/floors, seat bottoms, fire walls and bulkheads. The minimum air gap to heat source is just 1mm.

Gold Reflective Film forms to any shape, is far more reflective with greater weight saving and is preferred over aluminized cloth and waffle board.

CONSTRUCTION: Metallized polyimide film laminated to glass cloth with high temperature acrylic adhesive protected by a release liner.

FEATURES: Excellent heat reflective characteristics and is easy to install. Withstands 675F of radiant heat for a minimum of 8 hours

APPLICATION: Heat reflective material used in the auto racing industry.

Price is PER linear foot (1' x 2')! For a general idea of how much you want, to cover firewall it takes roughly 5 Feet with some for leftover!

Shipping price will be added in at checkout, it is a flat rate of $10 for less than 10 feet. More than 10 feet is flat rate of $15."

I know this thing is like uber freaking overpriced

but seeing as the Rx8, and rotaries in general produce a crapload of heat. I wonder whether this thing would be worth it to put on the intake piping and manifold?

probably not for the NA people but maybe for the FIed folks?

just wonderin since my friend says its very good and actually works

granted he used it as aluminum foil.......sigh

The Ace 12-18-2007 04:34 AM

It is not soooo overpriced actually, and it does work. However, you have to think about the possible applications. The problem with 7s and 8s is not that the heat permeats everything, it's that the heat does not escape so easily the engine bay...

tajabaho1 12-18-2007 01:27 PM

so its not worth it on our cars

rotarygod 12-18-2007 02:41 PM

You do see that used on race cars so it definitely works. The Speedsource RX-8s wrap the intake boxes with it.

tajabaho1 12-18-2007 03:46 PM

lets say for FI application, lets go with turbo, would it be worth it to wrap this around the intake tubes and manifolds? the turbo? etc etc? will it make a noticeable difference?

my guess is that this can be used to insulate the cold side? i always see the hot side wrapped in exhaust wrap to prevent heat from getting out,

There are materials that work for both goals: keeping heat out, or keeping heat in. The reflective materials are usually to keep heat out of whatever we are trying to insulate (mainly for intake and air piping), while the cotton/glass heat resistant materials are usually used to keep heat in (mainly for headers and exhaust).

tajabaho1 12-19-2007 10:38 AM

makes perfect sense

40$ per square foot, worth it though?

rotarygod 12-19-2007 11:11 AM

They somehow consider a linear foot 1' x 2' so it's $20 per square foot.

tajabaho1 12-19-2007 12:37 PM

ahhhh, well, I guess if you can shell out 8.5k for a mazsport turbo kit, another 100$ for this film wont hurt much.......

Are you going Mazsport Turbo kit ?

tajabaho1 12-19-2007 01:22 PM

we'll see real soon

olddragger 12-19-2007 03:43 PM

it also looks so trick!
oscd

tajabaho1 12-19-2007 03:47 PM

^ which is a problem, I'd spray paint everything primer black in my engine bay once I'm finished modding, if the cops look, I'll just be like, nope, all stock

altspace 12-18-2009 07:02 AM

I love it! The RB intake pipe is covered as well, though not shown here.

Did you time it for the 2 year anniversary of the original post?

JinDesu 12-18-2009 08:06 AM

It looks... a little tacky....

I suppose it'd be great on items you don't want heated, like the intake tube to slow down heatsoak in traffic, but that'd be pretty hard to put on.

TeamRX8 12-18-2009 08:41 AM

there are better insulators for le$$, just because it reflects high heat sources like a glowing red exhaust header doesn't stop whatever it's wrapped on from soaking up lower heat sources like radiator heat

it's very tacky, how else do you expect it to stay in place? :hahano:

altspace 12-18-2009 03:27 PM

^Ha! I did it for 2 reasons.

1. I got the idea from Speedsource and ROAR racing.
http://www.altspace.com/lrp08/images/PICT2368.jpg

2. I enter my car in many local shows and the crowd/judges loves it (as do I). My collection of 1st place trophies proves it. LOL.

Is it worth it? Well for me I got the material through sponsorship. So I said why not try it and see what happens.

pdxhak 12-18-2009 03:51 PM

Woot! for 2 year thread revival

altspace 12-18-2009 04:54 PM

Right?! Talk about perfect timing.
