Engine Manager Software - Basic Question
 

It seems to me, that while many people are working on, or have produced mods for HP increases (Turbo, nitrous, supercharger) no one has cracked the electronic management properly yet, and this seems to be hindering all these upgrades.

Is this fairly accurate?

Im still very definately in wait and see mode, but am considering some sort of boost at some point. (quite likely linked to cash situation!)

Spot on statement ,no one truly seems to have cracked the existing ECU AS YET , be patient grasshopper everything comes to those that wait even death . :D

L+L is right. At this point we seem to be limited to about 75 h.p. in upgrades before the PCM becomes a hurdle. I have done a 55 shot with the standard other bolt-ons and the PCM is becoming an issue.

hey, we actually LOST hp with the big streetport because the ecu freaked out and said no....but then we gained it all back-and more when we got the cz on.

the ecu is based on self-preservation of the engine. yes, it's a hindurance, but it's an excellent design by itself. it shows mazda is taking the extra step for reliability these days. they want the rotary to be known as a reliable engine.

think of how many 2nd and 3rd gen rx7 owners added exhaust, upped the boost with an fcd, and blew their shit up... so you get a lot of guys claiming rotaries aren't reliable when it had nothing to do with anything except the owners lack of tuning knowledge.

yes, i wish it were easier to tweak, but you gotta hand it to mazda. i think they did the right thing.

Sure and I'm with them in terms of total paranoia, and reliability.

I know nothing about tuning.

I just know i love the car. My baby cant be hurt!

well Racing Beat and that one european Racing outfit can both write to the pcm now...

there is a race team- been around the forum a little while showing picsof their car(s), trying to sell of their wheels and seats etc who are writing maps to the pcm they are running a SC i thnk. Racing Beat has also said ON THIS FORUM that they can now write maps to the pcm but have not decided yet whether to offer a "flash" or not

the race team is the italian team astra racing, and yes, they can reprogram the ecu.

Re Astra, I have a price list with the race ECU on it. As far as know, it could well be an aftermarket ECU board integrated in the original PCM box. Some of my EFI Technology customers do the same to meet Group N regulations on rally cars. Worth a second, deeper look though.

Re Racing Beat, I can't believe they wanted to develop yet another air intake instead of being the only company on the market capable of re-calibrationg the OEM PCM. Does not make any sense to me. Powerchips (in Switzerland) claims the same though. But in this case, I know for sure they talk bollocks after having a chat with their engineer!

concurrent developement. they were/are working on both at the same time as well as other projects unrelated to the 8. the intake just got done first.

Let's wait and see then. I'm also curious how much they wil be able to modify in the calibration. If they do like some, a bit less/more fiuel, a bit more spark advance, they can stop immediately.
What I'm looking for is a complete indexing and access of all maps, functions and scalars in the calibration in order to :
- increase the catalyst temperature that governs the catalyst protection enrichment strategy
- modify the open/close loop table and set the AFR at part throttle slightly lean.

For Hymee's S/C project, it would be also interesting to have access to the MAFS transfer function (enabling him to use another, bigger capacity MAFS), base fuel tables, base spark tables, BARO sensor transfer function (to be replaced by a MAP sensor)...
