Drag Racing

I know the car is set up more for autocross. But i come from world of drag racing mustangs since there are not autocross tracks around here. I'm wondering on this car what exactly i'd need to do to make it drag ready? or if anyone has done it and know who i'd need to talk to. i know the basics such as the driveline braces to stop wheel hop, wider wheels and tires for the rear. i'm wanting to keep it streetable though. I know these cars make a lot of power up top, but what can i buy to make the power off the line and mid range instead of top end. i know a supercharger would me more suited than a turbo for this kind of app. any help would be great, thanks!

TheBurkeMan 06-14-2009 03:27 PM

you're gonna get flamed, but i think it would be cool if someone did a build to make an rx8 drag strip worthy

Brettus 06-14-2009 03:37 PM

Not too many people have gone to a lot of trouble to make the 8 drag strip worthy so there is not a lot of info on it .
You will get more low range (and up top) with a turbo BTW . See my link below for what an undersized turbo can do on our motors

def possible but better go FI...water meth.... def possible

Turbo+race gas lol.

Nothing wrong with wanting a drag racing approach. In the past others have cautioned people regarding the expense vs. benefit with performance parts. In other cases, people get flamed cause they expect to put on an intake and exhaust and go run 12's.

I think Brettus is on to something regarding an undersized turbo. Most of the worthwhile kits that are on the market will have you spooling @ 3,000 RPM's or close to it. The rotary might produce less torque than some piston motors, but to say it doesn't produce much torque at all is simply a lie.

The downside is you can do much more with less on other platforms. However, people have been racing rotary engines on the drag strip for a long time with a lot of success.

Something about a rotary with a turbo turns me on -___-

Brettus 06-15-2009 02:34 AM

I think the time is not too far away when the rotary drag race fratenity will unlock the true race potential of the renesis and surprise a lot of old school rotorheads .....

Puerto ricans!!!!!! lol

Here Todd, port this motor with a tooth brush...call me when you're done!

I'm not expecting a 10 second car out of this by no means! The car is quick as it is, i've road in 10 second cars and know that keeping this car as a street car makes anything that low out of reach for the most part. I'm not a fan of nitrous, so thats not an option. I was thinking a supercharger for the low end power since its already kind of stout on its own up top. Im worried about the boost and how much i'd be able to run on it without detonation of the engine. I've never messed with one of these things really before, i can build a 302 from the ground up lol but a rotary is in another relm to me! Any help or anyone who knows someone that could help would be great, thanks in advance and also thanks for the replies so far.

Hey guys, i just looked around a little more and found this, tell me what you think! Pretty neat if you got pockets that deep!

I gave my renesis engine to the guy that does my engine ( sent it over to PR) and guess what, he put it in a race car.. I spoke to him last week and told me is ready, so Ill let you know numbers as soon as he takes it to the track. Its not an 8 but its the renny and will be used strickly for drag racing.
And if you want to swap engines just search the forum. Theres a couple of very nice swaps around here.

any of you rotary heads find anything else on this? i've looked and can't find any info on how the guys dragging these cars are setting up the the suspension! i'm really interested in eliminating the tremendous wheel hop im getting on launch! and the shift from 1st to second!

marsredr100 got a 13.4 with his Pettit Supercharger setup on street tires. I think 12s are very possible with his setup.

I'm hoping to break into the 12s this year myself.

Someone on this forum has done 13.1 with an overboosted Greddy kit and some drag radials/ minor weight reduction, so high 12s is very possible with a boosted RX-8.

I find drag racing fun, so I'm looking forward to seeing what others can do with this car. As it gets cheaper and cheaper to own, I think we'll start seeing more and more of these cars at the drag strip.

most RX8 Drag cars out there that are serious competitors are 3rotors, many going with the classic 20b rotor, and some going with the 13b based r20b (20b with the new renesis rotor patent design). if you watch on youtube you will see some sick rx8 hitting some extreme speed. as for your normal 2 rotor rx8 there are a few that post some descent times, but are pretty much gutted out dragging machines.

You will need to change up the rear suspension to get better hookup.

Juan has not, but my clutch died a week after getting the 13psi pulley.

Other than that I think both of our transmissions have been fine. With the new clutch I have no problem shifting at high RPMs and chirp the tires/make the DSC/TC go off shifting from 2nd to 3rd every time.

I have yet to drag my car since getting the new clutch/flywheel, but I will do it once I get new plugs.

BTW, my tranny has ~39200 miles right now. I think Juan's car is at 30k or so.

I noticed a lot less wheel hop when I switched to the RB sway bars.

Shijin-Kun 06-17-2009 05:16 PM

Maybe getting a LS engine swap? I know someone with a LS6 rx-7 that drags his car and its quick.

TheBurkeMan 06-18-2009 09:58 PM

i've been wonderin about that whole wheel hop issue for a while, so basically switching rear sway bars is the best way to get rid of it?

TheBurkeMan 06-18-2009 10:10 PM

ok so what's the best way

dozer 06-18-2009 10:18 PM

9k rpm launch...and forget to feather the clutch really lightly :uhh:

I've also seen a bracket to mount to the rear differential kind of like the mustang cobra guys with irs run that they say will help with the wheel hop on our cars. I know they work cuz i know a couple cobra guys with them and u notice a difference but its not a perfect fix. I've also seen a driveline brace and an engine brace that i think if you did all three it'd help out tremendously. Anyone running these cuz i've never had a car hop like this!
