Does the supercat/midpipe create backfires?
 

I want to purchase it but I'm not too crazy about hearing my car backfire.

It all depends on your catback I think. I have the RB REV8 and do not have backfires. The Borla on the other hand does create them in conjunction with the RP cat.

I did notice however that when I pulled the CZ, I did have one backfire when the car was cold. It was not very loud, and went away once I warmed up. So, the rich fuel mixture most likely added that.

I was thinking of grabbing the jic titanium exhaust. So you think the backfires are a result of running too rich?

I have B&B midpipe w/Greddy exhaust and Jenkins has a hi-flow cat w/Greddy exhaust and we both backfire. In fact, we both shoot flames. :

i have the borla and supercat....as far as backfiring its not noticeable and only happens few times.

i have the b&b midpipe with the factory exhaust and it also backfires but not that often. On my car it only happens when i rev the car to 9000 rpm and shift in to second other than that it never happens. also the sound is pretty loud even with the factory exhaust......

hey if possible if you have a sound of the bb pipe with stock exhasut sound. been looking for a sound with that setup forever

When I strictly had the SR Motorsports Hi-flow cat & RB Cat back unit I had no problems. With the Greddy turbo put on (& hi-flow cat) it popped randomly, quite frequently. Tried to lean it out but it still backfired. Finally put the stock cat back on & the problem was about 75% better. Took the RB cat back off & the JIC Titanium & the backfiring has come back a bit. Gonna see if I can lean out the de-accel a bit more.

Has anyone experienced any backfire issues with the RP supercat and the Hymee exhaust? Does anyone even have this set-up?

The exhaust you use does not cause the backfire. If you take out the cat without retuning the engine leaner, believe me you will backfire in the most spectacular way. Does not hurt anything. What happens is Mazda in order to meet import rules for longevity of the catalytic converter sets the cars to run rather rich. Running rich keeps the cat cooler thus lasting longer. The trade off is lower HP and MPH. Without the cat, all that unburned fuel goes out the pipes and detonates. :eek:

Man when it does it on the track you get a lot of thumbs up and wows. :cool: I now have re tuned mine to run leaner so it does not do it as often, but I now know exactly who the get it to spit fire almost on command now. Right after I got the racing pipes put in I took it over to the dealership. They are helping to get it track ready. They all came out to see the fire works. In reality when it is all said and done Rotary engines inherently spit fire unless something is preventing it. In the case of the RX8 it is the cat.

So don’t worry about the tail fire you are not hurting anything. It does tell you though just how rich you are running and out lean you can go to get more power from the fuel to the engine and wheels instead of making fireworks, or trying to get cats to last a long time. :)

FE3P has the hks legamax exhaust with supercat. Used to backfire quite often but then he installed the HKS DLI II and 75% of his backfiring went away.

I just tok out my CAT on a 2007 Mazdaspeed M'z model (6 spd manual) and replaced with a custom mid-pipe made locally with a resonator from an old Evo exhaust system. The fabrication is pretty nice and it uses a 3 inch pipe throughout. I have an AutoExe catback. I am getting VERY loud backfires, which is fine and kind of fun, but occasionally I seem to get a backfire from UNDER the car. Could this be from an exhaust leak or does the backfire sometimes happen near the mid-pipe on others cars too? It happens when I am revving hard in 2nd gear then go into 3rd and cruise without accelerating hard - usually gets a loud pop from somewhere under the car.
