Do i need a Catalystic converter?
 

Hey guys im getting a RB exhaust and in the future the RB Revi intake or maybe both together lol but i just wanted to know if i need to get the converter or can i keep my stock one cause i did some rescerch and it said the check engine light would come on i dont want that. Also i heard if i dont get the new converter the smoke or something will clog and mess up my engine can you guys help me please thank.

If you are in a state that does sniffer type inspections then you will need a catalytic converter to pass. Basically you have three options.

1. You can gut your stock cat. This is info on this forum about how to do it. Years ago, I did this to a stock Mustang H pipe by cutting the cats open, removing the catalytic material and welding everything back up. If you have a friend with a welder, this might be a viable option. Probably the cheapest option if you want to discard your stock catalytic converter. Same problems as below...noise and fumes! Also, you can't just put your stock mid pipe back on to pass an emissions test because it's been gutted.

2. Buy a catless mid-pipe. These are sold by several vendors and eliminate the catalytic coverter. This is a "race" only part and will through a CEL. Doesn't harm your engine, but will cause your neighbors to dislike you due to the extra noise. Also, the fumes from a catless rotary are somewhat stinky. Good thing about this option is that you can bolt your stock mid pipe with cat back on and pass your emissions test. Afterwards, just put the other mid pipe back on.

3. Get a high flow mid-pipe with catalytic converter. Rotary Performance makes a nice piece that isn't too noisy and probably doesn't lose any horsepower or torque compare to the other two options. These pipes aren't cheap, but will save you the hassle of having a noisy, smelly exhaust and give you a little more power.

I have a Rotary Performance mid pipe with Greddy SP2 catback, and have been completely satisfied with that combo. Racing Beat is a good choice as well.

What about replacing the cat with a resonator and putting th O2 sensor on there? Will it cause the check engine light to come on?

As for the fumes, can it be reduced by making the car run lean by using Interceptor-X?

I'm not looking to pass any emission test here.
