Digital MSD Window Switch

Has anyone tried the digital msd window switch? If so, did you have any problems with it? Are there pro's or con's versus the standard pill window switch? I have found the digital switch for cheaper than the standard pill switch, and have also heard that some people have had some problems with it. Has anyone else experienced this?

It is not compatible with the RX8 ignition signal. You need an extra ignition signal converter from MSD, on top of the extra speed modules for the RPM window determination. It's therefore becoming very pricey.

What do you want to do with it?

Is the standard pill window switch compatible with the RX8? Do you know where I can get a ignition signal converter to work with the Digital MSD?

Im thinking about adding a Nitrous Express wet kit and I have a manual 6 speed and want to be sure I have a window switch.

I don't know what a "pill" window switch is.

MSD makes its own signal converter : MSD Tach Driver.

The standard msd pill window switch uses 2 fuses that tells the switch when to turn on and when to turn off (they call the fuses a pill, 2000 RPM pill, 3000 RPM pill, etc.). Here is an example of the standard version:

Thanks for the advice on the converter, I will have to look into that. Have you tried to implement this on your car? If not, do you know of anyone that has?

OK, I see now.

I haven't tried it. But when I contacted MSD with a description of the signal , they said it would need the MSD Tach Driver in order to work.

Excellent, thanks Rasputin for the tips!

Im assuming that the MSD Tach Driver is needed because the RX8 has coil packs instead of a distributor.

If anyone has tried this, please let me know if you had any problems.

TeamRX8 02-13-2006 08:09 PM

the issue is that the rotary fires every revolution and a reciprocating engine fires every other revolution, so the rotary will read 2x high without some type of compensator

It's essentially because the RX8 ignition system has coils with integrated amplifiers, which receive a square wave logic signal from the PCM. The MD window switch works with 12V coils that are switched to ground.

Excellent, I purchased a MSD Tach Driver along with the MSD Window Switch. Thanks everyone for you advice and tips, I will be sure to let you know how everything works. :ylsuper:

Are you sure the guy new what he was talking about ?? I was going to order that from the same place and they told me it would not work.also called msd and they told me the same thing.

Willie27 02-15-2006 06:42 PM

Just to clear any confusion, I just called MSD myself to verify that this would work. He checked the coil signals and stated that the Tach Driver would work along with the Window Switch to convert the signal and it would work fine. Thanks everyone for you tips and I will be sure to keep you posted on my progress.

From other thread I posted on LS1 coils

Ok this may change everything..Just got some advice from tech at MSD .. This guy is a rotary nut and said he had a excellent solution that will work guaranteed. Set-up is as follows:

2 MSD part # 6302 /INFO:LINKhttp://www.msdignition.com/2007/light.html

4 MSD part # 8207 /INFO:LINK
http://www.msdignition.com/coil_blaster_6_8207.htm

I'm sorry, but this looks like the way I'm gonna go now..This info provided by MSD tech was much needed
and more reliable than frankensteining it..and hoping for the best.. Sorry if this has let any members down..

I will post results / pics when completed. Expect to hear
back from me in couple weeks..

ltrx8, you better prove your concept before leading everyone into the same hole you're about to fall into

rotary expert does not equal RX-8 expert

Or you could just buy the complete Esmeril Kit then they start selling them in a bit.

Renesis and 3 Rotor are not equivalent applications

Hey it is clearly experimental for me. But it has been done by rep at MSD.. I will no way hold it against him if I'm not satisfied with results. My thread started with plans to go with LS1 coils ' but went the way of the MSD pn#6302 dual coil igniters(x2) and pn#8207 blaster ss coils (x4)and of course custom wiring,if needed (waiting on that info) ..
I encourage members to view my progress and results and wait untill I am done.
Approx 2-3 wks/ end feb will post pics/ engine video/ Maybe even a step by step .

Cool ! Those look like the coils I'll be using in my setup(if theyre pn 8207).I have always liked MSD Ignition Systems. In 3 previous cars.If the Esmirel Racing setup is less than $400 with connectors (good deal) . Setup for me will cost less than $400 shipped.

Please be sure to do a before and after dyno session for comparison

I'd like to do that. I'm sure Ron will know where to get it done .I'll tell you what it can only go up .My stock coils are fried (@ least 2 anyway). How about this I'll do my own dyno. ie bring revs up a few times gradually while driving. Then pound the crap out of it .I've had it 4 yrs now and will know if it improves.Still dyno is good idea.
