Dead Cat!!! What should I do?
My cat converter failed recently and I am 7,000 miles outside the 80,000 mile warranty. The stealership quoted $1400 for a new cat and about $1800 for the part and labor. I am a college kid and cannot afford that kind of cost easily. I have been digging and research through out many old post to find out what I can. I was wondering though what everyones thoughts are on what I should do. I have to pass emissions where I live so mid pipes are out of the question. Heres what I want to know should I get another OEM cat if I can find a used one, Should I get the RP Supercat, or should I go with the SR Motorsports Hi-Flow cat? (I have been considering this the most) All input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Why don't you consider a Davesport 100cpsi sports catalyzer as well and find a shop that can weld it in place?
They are pretty cheap but seem to work fairly well. Their cost is not as high as other products that often fail anyway! |

How 'bout ....
|
go to the parts section and post a wanted ad.
|
or pay the smog inspector to let you pass. haha
|
$1400 for a cat?! wtf...it better include dinner and a tube of KY......
Go to ebay, buy a 2.5" MAgnaflow high flow cat for $65: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Magna...Q5fAccessories Then pay a shop $50-$100 to cut off your old one and weld it in. |
There are at least 3 OEM cats available in the for sale section on this site.

I have been asking if people still have those cats for sale. Also I would prefer to avoid going Frankenstein on my old cat with cutting welding on new stuff. I just wanted to know what people though on the 3 options I listed. I have heard some say that the SR is good others bad. I have search the forums reading reviews and other such posts for hours on here well into morning. Idk much about the RP one and like I said I have been trying to inquire some info on used ones from other members. I am really just concerned that these other 2 cats will not pass emissions if anyone has had either of these tested and passed plz let me know as this would greatly help my decision. Much appreciated for all the feed back so far I knew this was the best place to turn to.

Any CAT will pass emissions when new.
I have a Mangaflow CAT for my FC, it passes emission with flying colors, but how long would it last? thats another question. |
1800 bucks is just way too high to even consider. I would get the SR or the RP since it will be cheaper and more free flowing.
I live in an area where I need to get smogged and i'm rocking the catless BHR midpipe. |
BHR Midpipe! FTW!!!
|
If I lived in a 'smog' state, I'd put out a hundred or two on a slightly used stock cat, then drive around with the test-pipe until smog time.
Just sayin...... |
^+1 thats what us Vegas 8's do
|
I would but I would prefer to do this once and never mess with it again until something else goes wrong. What sucks is I looked at IL emissions testing site and I just happen to be in the 1 of 3 counties around the St. Louis area that requires this the others in the state are around Chicago. Anyways again thanks for the help I am looking into a use one. if I do not decided to do that then it is a a matter of whats better the SR cat or the Rotary Power Supercat. Again if any one has had experience with these I would love to hear your input on this. Thankyou again

There is nothing wrong in welding a catalyzer in place of another one, especially if the job is done right.
I don't know much about the RP and the SR catalyzers, i chose another option some time ago :) |
$400 for labor!?!!?!? OMG. I went to meineke and paid $30 to get my cat switched out. it doesnt take no more than 20-30 minutes. they're full of it.
|
go a a Muffler spot... 100 bucks or less. or stop being a pu$$y and just weld in the cat like we said.
|
Get an RP super cat.
|
picked up a stock cat for now off another member. might grab a mid pipe later this year and do a swap before emissions
|
If you still have your dead cat, gut that thing.
|
what just use it as a mid pipe cause I know some members have done that?
|
Yes.
|
^+1
|
Since Atilla is adding to this gut it I shall!
