Custom Stainless 3 inch Magnaflow Single Exit Exhaust Installed

Wanted some sound (compared to stock) so that I can hear the throttle at track days (at least that's the story I'm telling everyone), as at speed, the wind buffetting through the open windows and other (louder) cars drown out the factory exhaust note....

...so I drove over to Miami Muffler today and had them make me a custom single exit exhaust using stainless plumbing, a 3" round Magnaflow muffler and a Borla tip (I originally asked for a simlpe slash cut on the 3" pipe, but they insisted on the Borla tip- well, what the heck, in the end, it doesn't look bad at all).

They essentially used their jig for the usual RX8 dual-can, dual exit catback which they fabricate (very similar to the rx8store catback) and simply built the driver's side only (using a bend instead of a Y junction).

I left there very pleased with the catback. $500 installed full stainless, from cat to tip (they could do it in the $300's using aluminized).

The tone is very deep. At high revs (above 6K rpm) it goes from baritone to tenor. For those wondering- there is drone at cruising speed (as was expected), but I'm used to living with much more aggressive exhausts on other cars. It's quiet enough for around town, while it really opens up on the top end. Blips are now very clearly stated.

Cheers.

Thanks.

Sorry, no clips yet. I'll post some track footage to be taken this Sunday (from Sebring).

verbal description from above:

Filling the second shroud is important to many, aesthetically (as it should be, being that there is a hole there from the factory to be filled, as the OEM exhaust does), yet I see it as redundancy in weight and airflow ;)

Some more cameraphone pics.......

+1 for single exhausts

Nemesis8 10-12-2007 01:46 PM

I remember my single exhaust - :Eyecrazy:

Drove around the block, brought it back and removed it. :lol2:

Way crazy loud for my ears.

hmmm, if you're going for custom made single tip, it might be better to not use either exhaust shroud. Make the tip point downwards - then the car will match on both sides, and you have less mass.

What's funny is that I wanted either a turn down before the shroud or a slash cut on the pipe itself as it passed through the shroud, but I caved in to the peer pressure for some bling- the shop owner placed the Borla tip in the shroud hole as a test and it didn't look bad, so I was "what the hell, weld it on." Lol.

I'm still surprised as to how deep the tone has gotten. It's unrecognizable compared to stock. There is a deep reverberation from 1-5K rpm. At 5K rpm, the exhaust pulses go quiet, then after 5500 rpm, the song goes higher pitched into a tenor wail. Sounds very interesting. Never heard anything like this before.

OK, now we need sound bites - get busy man

TeamRX8 10-12-2007 05:41 PM

let us know in 6 months about the sound level, they always start off quieter when new, but eventually the heat takes it's toll

Most importantly, Does it shoot fire?

DarkBrew 10-12-2007 05:50 PM

Nicely done. When can we hear it?

SouthFL 10-12-2007 06:24 PM

Thanks all. I've used magnaflow mufflers for a couple of applications.
This one (aluminized instead of stainless) sustained about a year of 460rwhp LS1 power (no cats) with no decomposition of sound (this one did shoot flames, lol):

Again, I'll get some sound bites from Sebring on Sunday.
Cheers!

single for the win

Apologies for the shaky handheld vid. My friend was dipping it down at the view of cornerworkers (cameras must be secured).

Thanks,
Lol. The answers to these last two questions are found on the original post.
It was $500, installed, using stainless. They can build and install the same system in aluminized steel in the $300's.
