Custom Green Performance Intake

3 Attachment(s)
Here are a few pics of my latest creation- I had an extra intake box, so I spent some time the last few months testing different configurations... stock filter, custom K&N cone filter, Green Performance drop-in filter, no MAF screens, one screen, both screens, no trumpet, shortened trumpet, etc. My highly unscientific butt-dyno measurements combined with barely scientific GTECH numbers led me to this final configuration- one MAF screen with the stock length intake tube with trumpet, and the Green Performance filter, and the partitions removed from the airbox (more aggressive noise). I really liked what Superscout did with his customized lexan window, so I copied the idea for something personalized under my hood.

Even though it's borderline ricey, I also borrowed his idea of accent lighting inside the intake box with a small neon tube, with a relay tapped into the parking lights/headlights. No, it does nothing for performance, but it makes me smile to see it glowing when I'm checking the oil or just showing people the engine bay.

First set of pics:

That glass top looks hot. I def like it.

Thanks... I used a 3/16" piece of acrylic sheet (after a unsatisfactory attempt with 1/8").

You better PRAY that the light doesnt come loose and get sucked in. Very creative though.
Props!

Wow that looks great. How did you cut it?

I secured it pretty good, but that's one of the reasons I kept a MAF screen in there. I didn't have any idle issues with the MAF screens out, but I like having a safety net for the worst case scenario.

Thanks... I had the acrylic cut for me by a sign shop ($13 for two pieces, in case I messed one up : ). For the airbox I used a dremel with a cutting disc, which worked great. I had to do some clean up inside, but it wasn't a big deal.

I started goofing around with this a few months ago, when the ETA on the REVi was still up in the air... if I hadn't done this I would have bought it instead (and probably did the same window mod : ). Instead I'm throwing my $$ at a Greddy SP2 exhaust, and perhaps a high flow cat. My airflow CFM numbers (via CanSCAN readings) are quite a bit higher with this drop-in filter compared to the OEM, so I think it's breathing very good now.

I forgot to mention I also did this cold air duct modification to the VFAD opening- I removed the nylon sock and re-routed it straight down to the mouth of the bumper with a 3.5" ID 90 degree elbow... and I have a NACA-style ram air duct that I'm fabbing to meet up with it behind the front grill eventually:

With the underhood heat the rotary kicks out, I don't know about the longevity of that rotor decal... does anyone know what kind of business might do "etching" on plexi/lexan/acrylic? I'd like that same logo in a frosted/etched look instead...

RotaryNoob 07-17-2005 11:32 PM

The best way to do it would be to do a reverse sticker like that and then sand blast it on.

Rotary Rasp 07-18-2005 12:41 AM

^ beed blasting it would work the best. sand or beed, shouldn't matter.

Actually don't they have chemical etches, I know they do for glass? Probably easier to "paint" on a chemical etch.
