Here is an ok idea if you want to save some money on an intake. All you have to do is use the existing stock intake set up. Remove the stock filter and strip down the interior of the air box. A cone filter will mount perfectly on the port on the inside of the box, all you have to do is remove the plastic flange on the end of the port. And i also descreened the intake. I used a Blitz stainless steel mesh filter. I also cut and ported the top of the box very carefully and added some weather stripping and a plexi glass top, and finished it off with some polished stainless steel pan head machine screws. 10 screws total, but there are only four in the pics, it looks very nice. i have an air duct that travels to the airbox from the bottom front of the bumper that supplies the air. The intake noise is almost stock sounding and the idle is smoother than the old K@N typhoon system i used to have. I hope this helps out for some of you that want to save money.

Very impressive- you did a great job. Mind telling us what part# filter you chose that fits in there so well? Is it an oil-based filter like the K&N's?

That looks great. I have been hearing though that the stock filter is best so far. Do you notice any benefits or than looks 'cause that is looking badass.

Anybody know if there are advantages/disadvantages to the cone-style filter over a stock-style filter? Not so much the K&N vs. paper, but in terms of size/shape.

well the filter is just a very very fine stainlees steel mesh made by Blitz. it is not oil based, it cost about 60 dollars all you have to do is rinse it out with soap and water. It works very well. The only reason I added the plexi glass top is for monitoring purposes only, its really easy to see when to clean the filter, and a whole lot easier to remove. I have used alot of diffrent cone filters and almost all of them fit. I chose the Blitz filter because its strong and filters the incoming air just as well if not better than the K@N, and best of all you dont have to oil the filter.
And a few more things, the air box stays much cooler now because the interior volume is increased by removing the stock filter and shields. The custom air duct I made that flows to the bottom of the car is positioned so the air is forced into the airbox, like ram air. I really wish i would have done this from the start instead of spending money on two diffrent intake systems. I have tested this setup quite a few times with diffrent filters and also using the stock filter, I can truly feel the diffrence with a cone filter and a stripped air box, The stock filter just seems to restrictive. oh and i also added a few red LED lights inside the airbox, at night time the thing looks really really cool, almost like something out of a space ship. the filter glows a deep red, i will try and get you guys some pics of that tonight.

We would like a DIY thread with detailed installation pics. You know the kind where you take it all apart and show us how you built it. But pics of the red LEDs would be kewl too. :)

expect some pics tomorrow. the only thing that i chose to cut was the top of the airbox. Everything else on the inside of the airbox was made to be removeable.

Thanks for all the info. The DIY intake I did on my Miata was the best bang for the buck I could find. I have been thinking about something along these lines by fabricating an insulated box, but never thought about being able to retain the stock airbox. By any chance did you take any pics of the ductwork you did behind the bumper? I'm assuming you had to take the bumper off to do that?

Man now that is a damn fine job. It was exactly what I have been thinking about but to lazy to start. Man you could have marketed this as a kit. With the leds and stuff its pimp. You could also use colored plex if the notion took you. Your signiture will be on my car this weekend! I'm just looking for a type of scoop for the air collecter at the bumper. Again damn fine job.

that is some pimp shiznit right there... getting the 8 back tomorrow its been in the shop getting new engine and stuff from that stupid raccoon... its like christmas eve i cant wait just get back in that thing again :cool:

Glad to here yooou extened the front air tube.

I've been thinking about doing the samething until something really good comes up for an intake system.

From what I have seen there waas no reason why a cone fileter couldn't fit into the the stock box.

Been too busy working 12 hour days, Glad to see someone do this and prove it works.

And how much more HP will a AEM air intake give you? How much more than your setup?

I bet not much if any at all.

This damn ECU chip can not handle any radical improvements.

Thats one of the nicest DIY jobs I've ever seen. Thats show quality right there. Unique and well executed. The plexiglass top you put in as an afterthought really sets the piece off. Props to you man!

I only wish you had some larger sized images so we could appreciate the work more :).
