Coils are done for, what kind to get?

Throwing a CEL for some random misfires and checked my coils and theyre not looking too good. It's about time to change them anyways I was thinking about the BHR ignition system but dont really have enough cash at the moment. I have Magnecor 8.5mm wires that I just got in, and new NGK sparks so all I really need to refresh my ignition system is coils. Is there a coilpack out there better than the OEM's I have now? Any links to prices & info would be appreciated.

I can't afford at this time or I would get them. Thank you for the link though. Can BHR sell JUST the coilpacks and not the whole ignition system does anyone know?

RX8Soldier 07-24-2011 07:51 PM

Mazmart.com is a forum vendor. They sell coils for a good price

Jake33 07-24-2011 07:59 PM

So i'm assuming there isn't any better coilpacks for the 04-08 RX-8 other than OEM ones? No one makes any aftermarket coilpacks except for BHR, right? And if you wanted those ones, you'd have to purchase the full ignition system, correct?

RX8Soldier 07-24-2011 08:05 PM

There are no aftermarket coils worth mentioning, other than BHR (unless you know how to fabricate your own...)
Go with OEM or else email black halo racing

Thank you Soldier

Thank you BHR. And I will probably end up getting the OEM set off Mazmart. Thanks for the help guys

if you coupon it up right (check fatwallet) you can get a set of coils for 100 bucks from advance auto.

I too would love the BHR, but its cost prohibitive at the moment.

keep in mind some of the coupons stack. so you can use more than one.

WingleBeast 07-25-2011 06:18 PM

Like when a couple of my coils went at just over 40,000 miles, taking out the front 02 sensor, a set of spark plugs, and the catalytic converter? Plus giving me a rather interesting drive limping it to the dealer?

if you NEED coils ASAP, and if you aren't set up at the moment for a 400-600 dollar expenditure, then, no, you can't go wrong with OEM coils. However, if you purchase said coils (for about 100, as i priced them), then purchase the BHR/esmeril/whatever later (say, 5k-10k miles, etc), you can always offload the oem coils (or keep them "just in case").

Jake33 07-26-2011 06:38 PM

Thanks drift. I purchased a set off Mazmart. I'll probably end up getting the BHR system in the spring when I take my 8 out of the garage

NavyShinka 07-26-2011 09:49 PM

That's a big agreement on the BHR ignition system. I've had mine in for ~150K miles now and still going strong.

Strongly recommended as soon as you can afford it.

Yes. Their kit lacks a VERY important component and when you factor that in, our kit is a little less expensive. Add to that the fact that we hand-build our brackets, dress out the harnesses, and build the spark plug wire sets in-house (so if you ever have a problem you know who to contact) and I would say peace of mind is rather cheap from BHR.

Not to turn this into a BHR fanboi show but you can't go wrong with the BHR set. Stay with the stock coils until you can afford the better coils. I ran stock coils while turbocharged for a couple thousand miles until they died. Stock coils work fine, you just end up burning through them in about 30k miles or sooner.
