Catback vs. Custom

I just purchased a 2004 RX-8 6 speedM that is ALL stock...Im not looking for much of a performance gain(at 238 stock...who needs mroe :icon_tup::wink2:) Im just looking for a good sound. and I was wondering if it would be better as far as price and sound for me to pay the $982173491274 and get a catback or if simply removing the muffler and placing a custom straight Y would give me a decent sound? also fi it would damage the motor do to lack of back pressure...

just purchase your favorite brand muffler (not to big) or a glasspack (what i did) and get them to y pipe it out, single exit, whatever floats your boat man. my glasspack has been on for a year and sounds beautiful, i get compliments all the time. i would never pay $400+ for an exhaust system. waste of money for what you can do with a little research and a welder.

RX-8newbie 03-02-2010 07:16 PM

I put a glasspack on a firebird with a 3.4V6 and it sounded...decent at the least...i just needed a cheap "muffler" because the original had a hole it it...I was gonna kinda try to stear clear of the glasspack

05rex8 03-02-2010 07:16 PM

wow......

RX-8newbie 03-02-2010 07:17 PM

wow what?

RX-8newbie 03-02-2010 07:29 PM

also, Mr. Pistonkilla...any sound clips avalible for the sound of your glasspack?

pistonkilla 03-02-2010 07:29 PM

do what you want man, iv got friends with hks hi power, cork sport, and exotic speed. i, and other people, prefer my sound to theirs any day. not raspy, but def sounds like its supposed to. its not like ppl are going to crawl under their everyday and see the pretty carbon fiber you payed 800 bucks for that sounds the exact same and offers the same if not less performance depending on the its design.

lol no offense taken man. just chipping in my 2 cents. im in college and dont have $400 plus laying around to blow on a exhaust. glasspack is straight through and in essence is almost identical to a ton of mufflers used in popular systems for the 8, just a little less of the "packing" used to muffle the exhaust note. also, ppl wasting that much for the mere 2-5hp gained from this mod on the 8 boggles my mind :Eyecrazy:

RX-8newbie 03-02-2010 07:45 PM

I know right...plus it comes with 238(manual) HP if im not mistaken from the factory...what else could you possibly want...unless you were plannin on doin some serious racing...haha, but I am also in college so that is why I ask the original question...either I (or someone)can make me an exhaust or I could spend a gazillion bucks on one (which I dont have lmao)

J_Owens 03-03-2010 09:54 PM

wish i would have done that instead of my turboxs, plus my turboxs leaks and smell gets in car, might have to have it welded, would like to know about your setup pistonkilla, maybe do the same if you dont mind a copy cat, and sell my turboxs. if you can pm me details what i will need etc would be cool. already know a welder i can take to

Got any close ups? I have heard glasspacks on a rotary before and it sounded sick. I have a semi-custom setup already just curious which glasspack you went with. How long have you had it? I was always worried the heat would melt them.

RX-8newbie 03-04-2010 05:41 PM

what brand is the glass pack

pistonkilla 03-04-2010 06:42 PM

iv had it on for about a year now, that clip dosen't really do it justice but it was the only thing i had available to make the vid. heres the link to the glasspack i used...mad cheap lol. but hey, sounds good and thats all i care about :aroused:

yea that clip does my exhaust note no justice, but it gives you a main idea. it's to distorted on the vid, sounds much better in person.

Nice, I got a Flowmasters muffler to, the 80 series crossflow with a resonator in front of it. I even got nice polished tips on that dual exhaust setup and cost no more than $200 with labor. It sounds nice paired up with my midpipe.

RX-8newbie 03-06-2010 12:28 PM

I think I might cut off part of the pipe and put a thrush and get a custom Y pipe made from the end of the glasspack back and some sort of "chrome" tips

make shure you get it welded right I did my own tig welding with stainless steel rod this will help to prevent cracking glass packs are not very good at getting rid of heat
