Cat or downpipe replacement

Has anyone kept there stock mufflers and just eliminated the cat w/ a high flow cat or downpipe? If so, what were the effects on the noise level of your exhaust. I'm considering putting some rx8 mufflers on a FC rx7 to quiet it down a little, but i dont want it to totally eliminate my exhaust note. Thanks

Here come the Search Police.
Yes, all the above have been done. Anything you do will change the sound of the car.

Have you seen the stock rx8 muffler (not plural, there is only one)? If not it is huge, you will have incredible difficulty fitting it in your FC. I would know, I used to have an FC. The differential will be in the way as well as the gas tank, plus from looking at it with the tips, it will likely run into the suspension because of how wide it is. Let alone the fact of how low it will have to hang IF you actually get it to fit.

Just FYI.

LOL, well I guess I need to crawl under an 8 and take some measurements first...

ddub 09-09-2006 11:56 PM

~50-51 inches long, ~9 inches tall not including exhaust hangers, ~12-13 inches wide. Length includes tips, rest of measurements don't. That is just the muffler portion.

Hope that helps.

Oh yah also it's pretty heavy. There's a lot of better solutions for an FC...

LOL, wow. Well thanks for the help guys. The only reason I considered it for the FC was b/c i figured with my current setup (rb header, high flow cat , 2.5 piping, and dynomax mufflers), this would help quiet things down, but still provide decent flow. Thanks again
