borla v. greddy opinon
 

i am by no means an expert on fluid dynamics so i figured i would shoot this one at you guys.

on a tubo application i know the larger the exhaust pipe the better since turbos dont experience the same backpressure issues that NA engines do.

borla is 3in and greddy is 70mm which is ~2.75in the only thing is greddy is a clean Y split into 2 stright mufflers, while borla is a transverse mounting with 2 2.75in pipes.

so is the transverse so much more restrictive that i would be better off with the greddy? mind you i would also have a 3in midpipe.

what wins? a 3in system with mediocre muffler (borla) or 2.75in system with stright shot mufflers (greddy)

PS borla muffler is not as restrictive as i thought, but still would like your thoughts

(the bottom muffler is the rx-8 setup)

The problem is that neither of them will gain you much at the wheels. Basically, you should go with a sound preference. The price is nearly the same, borla for $630. Let me know if you need the web addy for that.

My opinion: Borla=Daily Driver Greddy is much louder

If you plan on pairing with a midpipe the greddy gets extremely loud.

Here is a crazy wild idea. Since both are about the same price and neither really have any performance benefits over the other try and go for quality. Both are made by big name companies and both are Stainless Steel. Well there are different grades of stainless steel. From what I remeber when I checked the Borlas is made from full 304 stainless steel. 304 is a pretty good grade. Type 304—the most common grade; the classic 18/8 stainless steel. 300 Series—austenitic chromium-nickel alloys.

The Greddy piping is made from 304 stainless steel but the muffler itself is made from 409 stainless steel. Type 409—cheapest type; used for automobile exhausts; ferritic (iron/chromium only). 400 Series—ferritic and martensitic chromium alloys. Martensitic stainless steels are not as corrosion-resistant as the other two classes

So basically the Borla is made from a better quality and corrosion resistant material than the Greddy is. If price is close shop for quality instead.

using something like logic will never end this debate. only voodoo and white cheddar cheeseits will work.

ive heard about the welds on the borla could go if the temp gets high enouph.... this may be an old wives tale.... in the end I really think it comes down to sound / look more than anything else

Best option is turboxs full headerback exhaust. All piping is 304 steel with 3" ID, including after the rear muffler out to the tips. That's full 3" ID midpipe and exhaust for only $499.

They used to sell this setup for closer to $1000, but got mad when people on this forum kept bitching about the exhaust tips being too recessed and they dropped the price saying they'd be discontinuing it. But that was around 2 years ago... and it's still for sale. I think it's the best deal around for rx8 exhausts.

im referring to the greddy turbo pipe, wich is around $1000. but its still only 70mm, which is a quarter inch smaller than the borla (and the turboxs) so the question was never what one to buy, it was what would be better for turbo flow.

i have the greddy.. it does not look cheap in any way its been on for 2 years now no holes to corrosion..

About it being loud its not really loud my intake makes more noise than the exhaust.. it sounds nice and deep.. everyone always says it sounds soooo nice .. nott o loud but also you can hear it..

Im gonna pair it up wioth the mazsport midpipe as soon as they actually start building them...

Never heard the other one in person.. ont he computer it sounds different

The hks hi-power sounds like ass, and makes the rear of the car look like ass. I say this after owning the hks hi-power, the hks legamax, the borla catback, and the turboxs headerback.

the greddy tips look like rolled up condoms! and i love it because with my WWP looks soo good because the greddy tips have like a golden look to it

yeah, so no midpipe. Most of the gains you'll get from an exhaust swap is from the catless midpipe.

I gained some power witht he greddy and intake.. on the upper RPM Range.. Its not breatht aking but it is..

I ran against 1998 Mustang GT and Be ebat me but once i installed my intake and exhaust I pulled him all the way until 4th gear and i beat him by 1.5 car lengths.. So yes you do get gains..

prior to it i lost by 1 car length.. 1st i pulled 2nd he began to pull and 3 rd he was pulling harder.. and so on but it changed after those installs.. i still have stock cat though..

yeah, but what I can't tell you is how much more or less you'd make with the different exhaust design or with a larger ID.

did you change the tips...

yeah, the tips are ass on the turboxs system. but even with the additional cost to cut them out and install new ones, it's still a bargain

mysql what made you drop the borla setup? i know it is 3in, but is the flange 3in as well? basically if i hook up the borla to a 3in midpipe will the entire system be 3in or will the flanges all be necked down because its a "bolt on"

I don't recall the connection points on the borla, but what I ran was:

midpipe - catback
=================
1. oem - oem
2. oem - borla
3. b&b catless - borla (too loud, uninstalled borla)
4. b&b catless - borla (with turbo, sound was nice)
5. b&b catless - hks hi power (with turbo, sounded like ass)
6. b&b catless - oem (with turbo, sounded almost stock)
7. b&b catless - hks legamax (with turbo, sounded great, higher pitched than with borla)
8. turboxs catless - turboxs (with turbo, deep rumble to it, would sound too loud NA)

most systems are developed to hook up to the oem cat, or the oem catback, so the majority of exhausts connect down to the standard 2.5" flange afaik.


With everything above that had B&B catless, that's a 2.5" pipe... I made 307 whp @ 9 psi with the b&b + legamax, which is also a 2.5" catback.

when I get the bhr coils, I'll hit up the dyno again and see what kind of numbers I can make at 12 psi with a full 3" id exhaust system

the only two exhaust i know of that are full 3 all the way are hks high power single outlet and turboxs
