Borla issues - defective 1st productions

I purchase a Borla exhaust months ago from the rx7/8store.com and could not resolve the rattle issue. I tied back the heat shield, etc. with no luck. I was IVO Borla down in Oxnard, CA and stopped by to have them check it out. Before they even put it on the lift the guy in the garage said it was an older one. The customer service rep I was dealing with was not aware of the rattle issue. He took down my name and address and they shipped me a new one. It arrived today. There is a very noticeable difference in the design. The canister is angled differently creating much more room between it and the heat shield.

Good to know,

Out of all the exhausts, I prefer the sound and tips of the Borla the best.

Yet, I like the design (less bends) of some of the other exhaust manufacturers.

NICE! :D

Just curious, is it normal for the exhaust to turn "brown" after some period of usage?

can you explain a bit more about how you got the updated borla? You spoke directly to borla about it?

I just checked mine, all the pipes are brown, but the can and the exhaust tips are still bright chrome.

Yea, I think they are aware of the issue now. Are you sure you have the old one ?

mysql101 12-01-2004 08:47 PM

the tubing goes all the way up to the hanger on mine (looking at the second photo you posted), so I can only assume mine is the older version.

Does it rattle when you go over bump ? (after the DIY fix?) If so, then give them a call and see what happens...........

I emailed them using their 'contact us' form on their website, but there hasn't been any reply so far.

I doubt you will get one. I have e-mailed them several times that way over the years and I have always had to call

Is your canister angled down like this one ?

can you explain a bit more? What should I be looking for in that picture?

Notice the brown mark at the far end of the heat shield ? That is where the canister would contact the heat shield when I hit bumps. Now it is about 3 inches away because they angled the canister down in the back. Before it was about MAYBE an inch away. See the weld line of the canister ?(from the post above) Before it was parallel to the groundhttps://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...chmentid=35415

I'll be giving them a call. Mine was bought back in Feb '04 and has the same brown marks on the heatshield and is very close. Rattles intermitenly.

Hopefully I sent in the warranty registration form cause I can't find my receipt.

my borla has no such marks on the heat shield, but the unit is so high it is actually touching the heat shield on the top towards the rear of the car, and if i hit the heat shield, it bounces off the can. How does the new borla compare in position to the old one?

The canister was angled less, like the pic below

mysql101 12-03-2004 10:04 PM

oh! I think I understand now. My borla can is at a 180 degree angle - perfectly flat horizontally. Does that confirm that I have the old version?

cgrx 12-04-2004 12:31 AM

I believe so

Is there that much of a gap from the canister to the heat shield when the car is cold ? If there is a noticeably smaller gap, then you have the old one.

Dookie_Rx-8 12-04-2004 12:36 AM

to bad for borla everyones gonna be calling them now bout the "old version" and gonna want to "revised version"

i think i have the old one but i have no problems unless i dont notice, its to dark to check right now i check when i have time

cgrx 12-04-2004 12:45 AM

if it doesn't rattle I wouldn't worry about it. Mine would rattle when going over the bumps in the road..like when entering schools zones, etc, etc.

Performance is the same....

On the rear part of the can, there is no space at all, mines actually touching the heat shield.

cgrx 12-04-2004 08:49 AM

call them up for sure

I forgot how bad the damn thing smelled when I first got it. Its sickening

cgrx 12-04-2004 08:52 AM

From GUy321's post

This is definitely an older one.

lol, I drove mine about 100 feet, and stopped at a stop sign. There was so much white smoke coming from the back of the car I thought it was on fire!

philodox 12-04-2004 09:53 AM

Mine must be the old one as well. Mine rattles sometimes, maybe once or twice a week I notice it. Nothing big though. I'll probably just keep it as is.
