doubles are heavy.

overly large (by that i mean +80mm "tip") mufflers are stupid and farty. but yes, they're lighter and probably significantly less restrictive, but so are the non-farty ones ;). look?? i dunno, i like single tips (think FD/Mk IV/etc).

I have a question for seasoned rotorheads:

What does a rotary sound like with a good exhaust? I can barely hear my 8 running.

I love the sound of an uncorked V8, and I love the sound of sport bikes. I can't stand the sound of most import cars w/ loud mufflers though--"farty" just like Wakeech said. If I buy an exhaust, is my 8 gonna sound like this? What exactly causes this, is it intentional or avoidable?

hks make very good muffler is called n1 turbo is very quite but when you fit the gas it sounds solid with a nice bass. igot it on my 93 rx7.

for 3rd gen exhaust sound clips.

"Farty" sounding exhausts typically come from people who replace their mufflers in smaller 4 cylinder configurations. The farty sound comes from when they use a resonating muffler tip that just creates the retarded lame sound we've come to appreciate. It is usually accomponied by the fact they didn't remove any cats and just want to sound "mean".

If you buy an exhaust for your 8, I seriously doubt it will. Rotaries have always had the distinctive "bee's in a can" sound. Opening up an exhaust just makes it sound meaner and better :)

Yes the 8 is too quiet if you ask me, open those babies up!

On and on a sort of related note, what is with the HUGE muffler spanning the entire underlength of the back?!?

dcfc3s 08-12-2003 09:32 AM

Rotaries are OBNOXIOUSLY loud - Mazda has always made massive, convoluted mufflers to try and quiet the sound down.

That said, non-turbo rotaries can be tricky to get a good sound out of. The good thing is they have the same car in Japan, and Japanese are VERY picky about how exhaust systems sound. The tuners there put a LOT of work into tuning the sound and maximizing flow. Once Greddy, Apexi, HKS, et al start coming out with cat-backs, you can rest assured they'll sound great.

Turbocharged rotaries sound amazing, period.

The side port engine will likely sound different than the old peripheral port engine, but how is another question.

This will also be the first rotary that you can really hear the induction noise once someone starts uncorking the airbox. Previous non-turbo rotaries used an airflow meter that blocked the induction noise bigtime, or a carb, which has that funny carb sound :). The '8 has a hotwire airflow meter, which will result in some neat induction noise, at least hopefully it will :).

I'd wait for the Japanese companies to start cranking out exhaust systems, which should be Real Soon Now. Then the fun will begin :).

Rotaries are insane when it comes to decibel levels, I had a rock hit between my turbo and engine, thus making it so I was running w/o an exhaust system or turbo. The car was so loud a guy asked me if I had a Nascar engine under the hood.

I think they make small block V8's sound tame in comparison.

dcfc3s, I saw you have an 88 anniversary car, those are my favorite RX-7's.

Jt-Imports 08-12-2003 09:09 PM

I love how rotaries sounds. When I hear one go by im like hummm RX7 hehe, I dont even have to see it, but not like its hard, it has a special nice sound.

Large exhust looks stupid on the car. I think the double suits the car a lot better.

BRx8 08-13-2003 02:16 PM

naw, i don't like it...it leaves a 'hole' on the other side...it wouldn't look right...plus most sports cars have dual exhausts

I guess that would elminate the 3rd gen RX-7...:)

Dual exhaust is a fad that comes and goes. Personally, I prefer single - it's all business. Most duals are just for show, or to double up on mufflers to help quiet things down.

But, the exhaust pictured looks a LOT lighter than the stocker, that's for sure!

Hmmm...something interesting...

1st gen - single exhaust
2nd gen - dual exhaust
3rd gen - single exhaust
RX-8 - dual exhaust

They just can't make up their mind! :)

I got a Idea

Well igot a solution for u if you like the way a dual looks but want the prefomance of a single thjen get a singel and a dummy on the other side:D

WELL PUT

Whats also funny, is a great majority of the people I have seen in Japan all have SINGLEs on the 2ND GENS. Single makes the sound of power, I PERSONALLY think much better flow, and still has good backpressure with the bends in the piping instead of being all straight.. I like it, but then again I dont even have a 8 hehe Im sure a couple companies will come out with some duals for you guys soon. I have seen a couple, but they are SOOOO close to stock, I dont even see the point of them making something with the same piping, size and look hummm weird

rotarygod 08-15-2003 11:46 AM

Single makes the sound of power? What kind of statement is that? My 2nd gen sounded its best when it had dual mufflers. I can't duplicate it on my 1st gen and I built the same engine for each one. I don't like the look of a single unless it was originally designed for a single. On the same note, I don't like a dual exhaust on a car that wasn't designed for a dual.

Mazdatrix 08-15-2003 03:55 PM

There will hopefully be numerous exhaust "systems", mufflers etc. on the market fairly soon by various manufacturers - so everyone interested should kind of keep checking everywhere.

It will be interesting to see REAL versus claimed HP gains by all involved.

My car was borrowed by another company for test-fitting a muffler on a real U.S. production car.
It is a prototype ONLY !!! Final would be all stainless polished.

My impressions after ONE day of driving:
1) It's a good start.
2) There may be some power gain - would need real chassis dyno numbers (soon?).
3) Sound is good, although I was hoping it would be a little louder.
4) 4" tips are sure as big as you can go and still hope to fit ok in the bumper corner pieces - I'd like to see what 3.5" look like.

Dave Lemon----Looks good man. Hey it wont fit with the aluminum dress up things though? Not like it matter since it takes up most of the space, but I was just curious.

JT

Mazdatrix 08-15-2003 10:32 PM

Yes, it DOES fit with the exhaust finishers -- they are already installed.

swift21 08-20-2003 02:09 PM

hey dave how is going. I am the guy with the yellow celica that was at your place a couple of weeks ago. Do you guys have any body kits in stock for the 8?

Mazdatrix 08-20-2003 02:11 PM

Sorry - nothing yet.

mikeb 08-20-2003 02:27 PM

I saw this mazdatrix 8 at bolsa chica bbq and the exhaust looks and sounds great. Not to mention the brake upgrade on it. Thanks dave for the strakes you brought me. mike
