Resolved.

What exhaust parts did you have on it exactly? What is carbon fiber exhaust?

I personally can't stand it when people talk about back pressure. For some reason it just ticks me off. That said, the RX-8s stock exhaust probably has less than 1 psi of pressure inside of the pipe. It just flows too well for there to be any "back pressure".

I know on piston cars, you can damage exhaust valves by running without an exhaust manifold. Haven't heard whether or not it's bad on a rotary.

If you ran a straight pipe with no exhaust the last of your problems is 4k in damage... Then again 4k worth of common sense probably wouldnt be enough anyways

Uh, whut?
lol

And beo, it is bad for a rotary to run straight pipe. I had no mid or cat for a month and it fried the spark plugs, wires, and the coils. How??? I'm not so sure.

And what I'm planning on doing is running the exhaust from engine to pipes, and then y the pipes off and weld the mufflers from there.

Reconsider the causality. Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

What?

am i reading this right? you ran WITHOUT exhaust, dumping right underneath your car? we have EGT's between 1200 and 1600 degrees IIRC so that probably fucked everything under your car up. you can run a cat, midpipe or straight pipes no problem as long as you set it up right. if you were running without an exhaust mani too that may have caused the coil/plug failure

MazdaManiac 02-03-2011 12:11 AM

Nah. There are a LOT of rotary cars out there with VTA wastegates.
EGTs might be in the 1800°F range, but the actual exhaust temperature is a lot lower once it exits the pipe.

It is a good idea to NOT point the exhaust at something useful like a wire harness or the fuel tank, but it isn't likely that simply driving around without a midpipe will hurt much more than your ears and reputation.

Oh that explains it. So what you're saying is the BHR midpipe greatly improved my social life?

You drove around with no exhaust at all after your manifold?
