Any Ideas for a P0420 cell?

I have the rotary performance Midpipe with the Hi-flow cat. i have had it for about 6 months now. Everything has been fine. About two weeks ago the check engine light would come on and go off about once a day. While the car was at mazda for warranty work, they went ahead and pulled the code and said that it was from the o2 sensor. Well for the past 3 days it has stayed on solid. Any Ideas??

''P0420 = Catalyst system efficiency below threshold''

It looks as if the ''Hi-Flow'' CAT is not doing its job.
According to the workshop manual the monitoring condition for this CEL are;
1 - ECT = more than 158F
2 - Catalyst converter temp: more than 752F
3 - LOAD = 20 to 50percent (maximum calculated load values varies depending on engine speed)
4 - Time with purge control system does not operate: more than 20s

It also says possible causes are;
1 - Looseness of Front HO2S sensor.
2 - Leakage exhaust gas.
3 - Purge control system malfunction.
4 - VSS malfunction.
5 - ECT malfunction.
6 - Eccentric shaft position sensor malfunction.
7 - PCM malfunction.

I am no expert here so am only quoting the manual, but I would guess that the Hi-Flow CAT is not operating within expected parameters.

Hope that helps.

go to autozone and get a spark plug anti fowler kit. the package comes with two. take one and drill out the center with a .5 inch drill bit. screw the one you drilled the hole in into the other anti fowler. then screw the assymbly into the secondary o2 port then connect the o2 sensor ( may take a few times to get the right kit that fits the o2 ) this will hide the increase in exhaust flow from the ecu

I'm not offended, just letting you know that it doesn't work and the info is well documented on this forum if you care to look for it :dunno:

Well, I installed my Canzoomer Stage 1 on friday. No CEL anymore... weird?? But I can see a huge difference with the CZ installed.

was talking to the tech at our store, he said the same as the above "catalyst low effiency"

rx8guy86 01-28-2007 07:01 PM

Well, the CEL did come back with the CZ. I took off the RP Midpipe and no CEL. So its coming from the midpipe. Is that Highflo cat suppose to prevent a CEL? Should it be something that should be fixed from Rotary Performance?

your cat is shot, not the first one either if you care to search, seems that they have been replacing them

Actually, I talked to Rotary Performance. Last week the got the shipment of new cats in. This week or next week they will begin the testing stage before they ship them out.
