Aftermarket plugs and wires
 

What exactly do aftermarket spark plugs and ignition wires do? I've seen a couple different sets of wires for sale but what effect does this have on the car? Also I i got something like the rb ignition wires what about a distributor cap?

RX-8 doesn't have a distributor cap. Four plugs all with individual ignition coils fired by the ECU.

^didnt know that...so basically getting upgraded wire would do.....what for performance/relaibility/anything?

The wires will be more heat resistant.

but what im asking is what does that heat resistance do? does it only make the wires last long? Does it help hp? gas milage? idle? what are all the postives that come from replacing your ignition wires?

yes they will withstand the heat better than the stockies. the most important plus of aftermarket wires is that they will have less electronic resistance (Ohms, to the electrically inclined)

Thanks for all the info....i'm basically trying to find out if replacing my stock ignition wires with wires that can handle higher heat and have less electric resistance will do anything for the performance of my car. I.E. - HP(though i doubt it), smoother idle, gas milage....in laymans terms will it effect any of these...mind you this is with some aftermarket parts - high flow cat, revi and duct, dyno tuned cz.

smoother idle and better gas mileage... maybe I wouldn't count on noticing much though.

My plan is to wait until the maintenance period comes around (or maybe a bit sooner) for the plugs and then put on bigger aftermarket wires at the same time.

better spark for ignition too, along with better gas mileage and smoother idle, all very minor though, if you do iridium spark plugs, some nology or RB spark plug wires, and new grounding you should be able to feel this(although grounding alone wont affect much because the car is newer and once old grounds get mucked up and you re ground it makes a noticable 3hp difference or so)

Iridium plugs come stock from the factory.

I would caution you on the Nology wires. we had a poster here who melted his (spark) plugs when he used them.

anybody tried the rb wires? And did i read that wrong or is there actuqlly a possibility or picking up 3 hp wired just new wires?

Stay away from nology wires. I had them installed one year ago. They were fine for about 3 months and then they fried my coil packs, which I was lucky to get warrantied from my dealer only because he did a lot of bolt on work for me !!!!

bah, it doesnt add power (if anything .000001 whp probably :rolleyes: ), it will increase your gas mileage a smidge but it will mostly improve your idle

so at about 80 bucks for wires from rb and putting them in myself does anyone think they're worth it? Will it make a difference once i tune it with a cz?

Nope doubt they will make any difference. Save your money for a real performance mod.
