aftermarket parts under 1800
hey, just got the 8 a week ago and it is great. but i am already gettin a little bored with the power and am craving more. i have a tight budget and can only put in 1800$ right now. anyone got any recomendations on what should be done. i was thinking cold air intake and new exhaust system first, what else could i get that would keep it at 1800$?
Thanks |
a midpipe/high flow cat is the only exhaust mod currently that's really going to gain you any power, and from what I hear, with the stock catback it's not too loud. Intakes won't get you much, but you should pick up a little in the mid to upper end. You should still have money left over after those two. Perhaps for springs and sways.

Lowering springs
Cat back Ram air duct by Racing Beat drop in K&N Can zoomer ECU |
all of that would keep the price under 1800? how much hp gain do u think that all that would give me?
|
light flywheel.

k thanks

Racing Beat REVi Air Intake/RB Ram Air Duct or AEM Cold Air Intake (About 6 to 10 hp)
RP Performance Midpipe (About 6-8 hp) About $900. Only real proven hp adders. Get a nice exhaust if you want better sound. Get a used Canzoomer piggyback on this board & tune away. Lightweight flywheel for better acceleration. |
Id say clutch flywheel combo for 800, and then maybe a canzoomer, or a high flow/catless midpipe
or hey, an NA Interceptor-X, if it works, itll get you a good 20 whp, which isnt bad. |
AEM CAI
exhaust Canzoomer piggyback Clutch/flywheel nitrous |
Absolutely no need for a new clutch unless you are going far beyond the hp gain that you are shooting for. The stock RX8 clutch is good for about 260-275 hp. Unless you are going forced induction later, no need for a new clutch. If you are planning on going forced induction or nitrous then while you do the flywheel, you might as well do the clutch at the same time.

Nitrous is definitely cheap way to get lot of power.... haha
|
If not Nos then:
1st: Aluminum Flywheel = Best acceleration gain 2nd = Rotary Performance Mid pipe. 3rd = Intake. stay away from the old K&N typhoon version....it was known to reduce your HP. as for intakes, the racing beat has the following, basically an average of a 1.95 HP gain..... :-( Stock vs Racing Beat REVi Intake Adds An Average 1.95 HP Over The Stock System - 2000-8900 RPM Range Peak RPM Gains Over Stock - 3.5 HP @ 8300 RPM Maximum Power Gain Over Stock - 5.8 HP @ 8900 RPM Read everthing on this website : http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda4.htm |

i find it funny he has this car a week and hes bored of it... obviously you wanted a straight line dragger.... why did you choose a handling monster??? go try some twisties...
or maybe nearest domestic dealer and trade in yer 8 for a mustang... or something like that... probably raced the crap outta the engine already... hope its not the auto one... |
Here is another suggestion for hp gains.
1. Lightened Flywheel 2. Performance pulleys Those would run you about 700-800 before install (if you don't do it yourself) Then if you want try an intake system. Something to remember: 1. a gain of only about 15 hp will feel like a completely different car. 2. These first to mods won't add any hp to the engine but instead free up hp to the wheels. 3. A good intake and exhaust system will ultimately let the engine breath and exhale a lot easier which also translates into hp. Unfortunately there has been a rumor that when adding an intake system to the stock ECU that it corrects itself which limits hp gain. ECUs are expensive for good ones though as are godd exhaust sytems. The GReddy SP2 exhaust will run about 900 before install. |

What Jaguar MBA said. Pullies are a waste of money (coming from a guy who has them on his car). In dynos that I did it got about 1-2 whp across the rev range, not to mention it trip my CEL light & was a pain in the ass to make go away.

gareal, i love taking it around super sharp curves and no im not a straight line dragger but i do like to drag occasionally with my brother who owns a 03 rsx-s with a few mods in it(intake, exhaust, headers) however, i am simply not looking for hp gains just so i can race him. i just enjoy modifying cars and taking care of them, but the extra power is definitly worth it.
ok so basically u guys think, aluminum flywheel, canzoomer piggyback, RB revi intake, and some kind of exhaust? do u have an estimate as to how much that would cost if i had it all professionally installed? |
Flywheel (installation) and canzoomer (tuning) could be expensive, couple hundred, if you can't do these yourself. The intake and exhaust you should be able to do yourself with basic hand tools and some elbow grease.
Also, think about getting oil cooler and AC condenser screens to protect the car. Those things are exposed to road debris and won't be covered under warranty if broken. I would also suggest modding your car based on a final result/planned progression. That way you don't purchase parts that later on you will need to replace or get rid of. |
Also, I would get a RP Supercat before I got the flywheel & piggyback ECU. Much easier install. No tuning required.
|
does 1800 include install?
|
the only thing i see remotely worth it is a used cz piggyback... can give good gains and can be entertaining to tune yourself.
The flywheel will give you some gains but really pricey install for what you get, exhaust won't get you anything but noise, my experience is so far the same with a RP supercat as all i do is sound like a ricer now (although it seems to be getting better soundwise as it breaks in), and the intakes are way overpriced for what you will get out of them besides noise.... |
yes 1800 includes the install as well.
wats the name of the site for the canzoomer and where at that site can i find the item? |
Try the vendor forums.
