20b

I’m sure this has already been discussed some where so I apologize for posting again, but I couldn’t find it (Search). I have been reading a lot about a 20b swap. Can somebody tell me about how much and what is needed to accomplish this? Is it worth it?

hmm i think anacosta racing (in NJ) will do it for like 43 large or some such crazy number. personaly i think it can be done for les.. guess it depends on what kinda power you want to make. if it isn't too much just get a greddy turbo or an ssr one. if you want to make mad power then it'll hurt the ole' poket book. also would depend on if you can do somethign like this yourself...or if it would have to be all at a performance shop. i know i can't do it...but with enough tiem you can pretty much teach yourself to do anything. guess it depends on what kinda person you are. okay i am done babbling now.

that's not too bad..wonder what their mpg were like. also isn't it true that for emmisions you only need to have the engine apss for what year it was made..not pass for what year of car it is in? that's how i understnad it..btu if you are in a state without emissions then i guess it doesn't matter.

I discussed this with a friend of mine, we were not finished tallying up the price, and we were easily over $30k... not worth it in my opinion (other than to be able to say you have a rare breed RX8). The biggest thing to remember is that the 20b is over a foot longer than the 13b, so alot of mounts would need replaced, not to mention the radiator. Practically everything under the hood would have to be shifted.

Pettit did an RX-8 conversion? This I did not know...they've done a lot of FD conversions. The biggest problem is that they have to relocate the steering rack (on the FD at least) and it messes with the car's handling. PFS actually did it "right" on one or two where they actually moved the firewall and relocated the transmission slightly, so that the steering rack was untouched and the weight balance was restored to close to what it was prior to the conversion. God only knows how much this cost however, as its over $30K without that extra effort.

With the 60k that you would put into that project why wouldn't you just go ahead and build a huge turboed renesis. Low compression rotors, ported , T76 Turbo, Standalone... etc...develop it.

im not saying the money couldnt be better spent...just showing you what they did.

btw...it is ported with a huge turbo, and you wont be able to get the same power reliably out of the rensis as they did with the 20b...

I'd rather put in a built, single-turbo 13b if I were gonna swap

This is from an FC site, but I'm sure you can still apply a lot of the pricing for the 8.

I have read articles about a new RX7, with either a larger 2 rotor, or a 3 rotor.

If they did a 3 rotor, I bet the prices on those engines will come way down.

But they wont, just so we cant get em LOL.

a 20b swap is a rediculous idea for this car. not a big deal for a FC, and a pretty big deal for an FD. as of now only Acosta has one, and those guys are cocky as hell and are ******** according to some other tuner shops i know of on the east coast. unless you lived right near the place so if the thing breaks down it coudl actually be fixed and you dont mind putting in 60 grand into a 30 grand car id say its a bad idea.

Pettit Racing did te swap in this months Turbo magazine. The $60K that Acosta is charging is for everything down to new rims & tires, suspension, tranny, etc. That said, I agree that a $60K price tag on a $30K is ridiculous. Maybe something less extreme, say like $15K. event hen that is a princely sum for people who are buying $30K cars (slight generalization).

true, but its very impractical and unrealistic, many experienced rotary shops that swap 20bs into sevens still couldnt swap one into an 8.

think about it, YOU the average RX-8 owner out of...hundreds of thousands in the world...why would you be the ONLY private party out hundreds of thousands of Mazda RX-8 owners to own an 20b rx-8 first??? especially considering you havent even swapped a 20b into an RX-7 by yourself before? even with that kind of knowledgepower a swap into an 8 would be a huge undertaking because cars of today are MUCH more complicated than ever before with all of the new electronics technology.

acosta's doesnt count...because its a company car. but do you see why serious speculation of this job is ludacris???

i mean hell if you were to go onto a much more knowledgable board such as RX-7 club they'd probably laugh thier *** off at you so hard you would never want to come back. even this is a VERY serious job on an FC in which the car fits the engine fairly easily(in comparison to other rotary cars) and is generally left to the more knowledgable vets which are prepared to have spend a minimum of 35k on the swap.

The biggest thing to remember is that the 20b is over a foot longer than the 13b, so alot of mounts would need replaced, not to mention the radiator.
wow, i hope you never take on a 20b project. i cant even start with commenting on that

putting a 20b in the car, mounting it up, making it run, etc etc are all easy parts.

the only hard part is what do you do with the features of the stock ecu? will your abs still work, things like that.

since the 20b has the fc style crank angle sensor, it'd be a little easier than if you swapped say an rew motor in there. you could always bolt the renesis crank wheel to the 20b and give the stock ecu an rpm signal. it could be there for the rest of its duties, just not the engine management.

obviusly it's a lot of work, but it can be done, and done for less than half of $60k!!
