20b twin or single turbo

I’m doing a 20b swap and trying to decide whether to do a twin turbo set up or a single turbo set up. In the long term I want car to be a drift monster and time attack car, but currently just a fun weekend car. I’m not really looking for more than 700hp once I turn it into a complete race car will probably only use like 600 to 650 hp if that. What do u guys think twin or single and why u would go one way or the other.

I think you should stop starting new threads and start reading existing threads instead.

Mazda's twin turbo setup is troublesome and the turbos were undersized for what you are looking for.

what are u talking about their are no threads about doing a twin vs single turbo set up on a 20b i just checked so maybe u should take ur own advice and search the forms before u start saying things about others posts.

would not be using stock twin turbo setup, im just curious i dont know which way to go even if i find a good sized single with good spool up and good air flow the twin wouldn't have the lag the single does.

Well first you need to pick what you want to do with the car. It can either be a Time Attack monster or a drift project. If you try to build it for both it will be mediocre at both instead of really good at one of them.

RIWWP 05-21-2012 02:33 PM

Before you take offense rx8_drifter, have you checked forums where 20b engine builds are far more commonly discussed? They are exceedingly rare on here. So while you are correct that the existing information is incredibly limited, so will the answers because such a tiny slice of the community has even had to deal with that particular issue.

It's largely like asking about the best woodcutting ax on a cooking forum. The only hope of an answer is from someone that also happens to chop their own wood.

I have questions about my Miata all the time, but I don't ask them on the RX-8 forum, I ask them on the Miata forum, either through the searches or thread posts, where there are likely to be answers available.

I very much doubt you will find your answer here. After all, no one else did.

Geesh, so damn lazy.

There are plenty of threads discussing about 20b's and what power they have made on different setups (NA, TT, single, etc.) and what they can make so you can get a pretty good idea of power potential in those threads. As for twin turbo versus single, well basic turbocharging research will teach that just because you have more turbos does not mean you are going to make more power. The NA Speedsource 20B's make about the same power as Angeljoelv and 20brx8 (local 20b turbo RX-8 owner) have her on their single turbo 20B setups so what does that tell you? It's all about the setup and there are so many variables that come into play in making a car fast that it would be useless discussing it here.

Now, don't you think since people have been swapping in 20B's into RX-7's for decades that www.rx7club.com might be the place to ask that question? Think about your question and then try and use your head to determine where you should go to get the best information.

Triple turbo ... do it ... you know you want to

Chris 05-21-2012 03:55 PM

If you're looking for large fast spool have you considered twin scroll?

You might as well be speaking jibberish to him.

Arca_ex 05-21-2012 04:19 PM

How would you get a twin scroll to work as intended with a 3 rotor...

vtec.

9krpmrx8 05-21-2012 04:26 PM

He will need that both in Drifting and Time Attack.

rx8_drifter 05-21-2012 07:41 PM

iv looked into twin scroll but not sure how it would work with the 20b not to mention the crazy manifold i would have to have someone come up with. looking for the car to be more of a drift car but still want to be able to have a fast time attack car (wont be to hard to do both would just have to mess with the suspension setup when i wanted to do one or the other). BY THE WAY DON'T KNOW WHAT I DID TO OFFEND 9krpmrx8 but u just sound like a dick don't think i said anything bad to you yet u come on my post at talk shit i posted on rx8club because i wanted to hear peoples input on whether they prefer single or twin turbo and why they like either one. Not looking for hp numbers i know i can get 600hp from single or twin but they will handle completely different

There are a few reasons why people aren't taking you seriously:

- The number of people that talk about 20b swaps and never follow through is ridiculously high
- Drift cars have significantly different chassis setups and power delivery than Time Attack cars do
- You can't actually use even 600hp on the road. You may HAVE it on the road, but you can't USE it. A car under cruise uses about 40hp. Under full throttle acceleration, 600hp will get you from stopped to illegal speeds in under 4 seconds. Unless you immediately come to a complete stop to get that 4 seconds all over again, using 600hp will make you a complete menace to everyone else on the road, so even if you were to actually follow through with the >$30,000 needed for this build, you would be someone to avoid
- In order to compete in either Time Attack or Drift, you need safety gear that would make street driving dangerous to yourself without actually putting it all on every time.

No one here believes you have any idea how much power 600hp actually is. My best friend has his Evo up to mid 400s all wheel hp. As he advances through his driving education, he had the good fortune to pick up a up a professional driver (low tier Grand-Am) as his personal instructor in exchange for co-driving in his Evo. His instructor insisted that he turn the boost DOWN to just under 400awhp, because the car was already fighting for grip too severely out of the corners. It needs full race slicks to go back up to where he had it, much less any higher. And that was all wheel drive. How much better do you think you will fare with nearly twice as much power and only going to 2 wheels?

You are a dreamer at this stage, and we can tell. Dreaming is ok. It really is. But temper your dreams with reality.

lol this makes me laugh so hard i have already started build it will be done i 2 months 600hp is scary around a track i would know driven several cars in the 500hp range both awd and fr cars. i love the fact u don't think i know what 600hp actually is you dont even know me. "you are a dreamer at this stage, and we can tell." lol really ok, was just looking for was just looking for good people to discus their differences of opinion on twin or single turbo set up pretty sure im going with single but was looking for some other opinions is that so wrong. again already doing the build will be tuned for 450whp for now latter on when i get better drive-train and a few reinforcements i will be amping it up, and only dangerous on the street if u drive like a kid.

I'm going to point out one thing about what you posted: "You don't know me."

You are 100% right. We don't. All we have to go by is your limited posts with terrible grammar and significant misinformation reacting to comments the same way that we see any kid trying to puff their own importance.

So no, we don't believe you. If you feel the need to be believed, then you would easily have methods of proving us wrong, but largely we don't take you seriously enough to even care if you are lying or not.

this isnt a formal letter or anything of the sort so i dont feel the need to be grammatically correct "puff their own importance." i responded the way u would if someone came on ur post and more or less bad mouthed u. the topic is which do u like better single or twin turbo was looking for respectful input from members that care about helping others. if u dont have anything to say regarding the original post why even post at all. ur not helping me or any other individual who might be thinking the same thing. do yourself a favor and stop embarrassing yourself.

I assure you, I do not feel embarrassed in the least.

Just simply pointing out why no one is really giving you answers you are looking for. It's up to you to change perception away from where you started it at.

Have fun.
