They needed to be changed, obviously.

But the light brown ash deposits are typical.

Nut was loose.
Once I picked some of the melted plastic away I was able to remove the nut with my fingers.

Clearly I didn't have it tightened enough or tightened at all (fail)

Like I said before. Aftermarket catalytic's IMO are not as good as the OEM for emission control.
