Chapel Hill is great, and you're convenient to RTP which is great for jobs(especially IT). Also if you ever do plan to have kids, the school system is great. Pretty much all of Chapel Hill is (good area's). As for the mountains, unfortionatly you about an hour and a half away from any.

I live in the Triad. The triad is Greensboro, Winston Salem, and High Point. Based on your desire to be close to the mountains yet avoid harsh winters this would be a great place. Charlotte is 70 min. away and Durham is 45. Plus, we could watch football!!! LOL. Let me know if you have more serious questions.

Thanks Teefar - I know Chapel Hill is excellent, especially the schools. But it will probably not be my first stop since it's more expensive and I won't need to worry about school systems for a few years.

Cost of living is awesome in Greensboro. Especially considering the size of the city. Traffic isn't really a problem here either unlike Charlotte and Raleigh.

Ugh... Raleigh traffic FTL.

Compared to RI, cost of living in the entire state of NC is awesome!

For jobs, you should also check out Greenville, SC. the area is booming in Engineering and Technology. The congestion is much less than Charlotte, and you could consider commuting from the mountains if you like that area. Ashville might be a little far, but there are areas in between as well.

only kidding - good luck with your move and job hunt. for your degree you could always consider looking at one of the universities down there. they tend to have a decent sized IT/IS crew.

It's more the state of RI that I have to GTFO! It's soooo bad, so corrupt and I just refuse to pay for it. And since I want out I'm going to move somewhere warm!

But I'll be able to actually afford a big place, still have a life, and not watch my taxes climb each year.

3-4 bedrooms = room for you and the family to come stay when you want to get away from the winter and ride some nice roads!

i actually grew up in NM and all my family is still there so low cost of living is something they always throw at me. i just couldn't take how slow the pace is there and had to get my fix by working in NYC. CT provided that and a usable front and back yard for my kids.

Lots of jobs listed, mostly in the Charlotte area. I'm starting to ween through them and have a few other things to check on this week. So I should be sending out the first round of apps/resumes starting next week.

Well don't forget about the Triad, Triangle, and Asheville area. I recently went to Asheville and I have to say it was gorgeous.

But Greensboro is sooooooo cheap!

I did a couple of prelim searches yesterday. 1st was w/in 50 miles of Asheville, mostly to satisfy my curiousity. Some options there, but not a ton. Then I did a search w/in 20 miles of Charlotte and sure enough - over 600 listings. I'll do some more through the rest of this week with each general area (G-boro, W-S & Charl) and will probably have a couple hundred listings saved that I find interesting.

On hold until the Fall. This will be my last New England winter, so November at the latest. I'll be restarting the job search end of August.

NC is really nice, used to live in Wilmington. If you're dying for the mountains, I absolutely LOVE Greensboro...and it's kind of artsy/fartsy and all. Charlotte is pretty cool too. Winston-Salem might not be too bad an option either. Gotta tell you this though...the farther up the mountain you go, the weirder it gets. For instance, Boone, NC...IT'S FREAKING BEAUTIFUL, but damn, can't get a beer because its a dry county (no alcohol sales)...random stuff like that.

Wilmington is nice from what I've heard, but the same applies - coastal is out.
