April 28-May 1 – – Braselton, GA

The 2011 Mitty is returning to Road Atlanta from April 28-May 1 for our annual celebration of all things automotive, and this year’s event promises to be the best yet.

Grand Marshal: Jim Downing will be our guest of honor at the event,. We’ll be recognizing the accomplishments of Jim and the rest of the Brock Racing Enterprises team. Jim will be on hand throughout the weekend to check out the races and meet fans. Plan on stopping by the Classic Motorsports tent to attend an autograph session.

Featured Marque: Of course, no celebration of racing accomplishments would be complete without the participation of our featured marque, Mazda. The 2011 Mitty will feature many of the incredible cars the company has built over the years. Expect to see several of the original Mazda race cars that have landed in the winner’s circle; these historic racing cars will be on display all weekend—when they’re not on track, of course. Be sure to look for many other Mazda surprises at The Mitty as well.

A Japanese Invasion: This year’s event will also be a celebration of all Japanese sports cars. We expect a record number of cars from makes such as Datsun/Nissan, Toyota, Honda and, of course, Mazda. The MX-5 Miata will have a special corral.

Mazda Drivers Party: After the racing action on Friday, Mazda will host a special party open to anyone with a Mazda key in their pocket. Come to meet and talk with the Mazda Pro racers, factory representatives, and executives that help make this company the number-one choice of amateur racers.

Classic Motorsports Small Bore Cup Race: The Classic Motorsports Mitty will host the second round of the 2011 Classic Motorsports Small Bore Cup. The series is open to small-bore cars produced before 1965 and their continuation counterparts. This leg of the competition promises to be a hotly contested battle among our readers’ favorite cars.

Kumho Autocross: Thanks to our friends at Kumho Tires USA, the 2011 Mitty will again offer spectators the chance to drive a Kumho-equipped Mazda MX-5 around our infield autocross course. This driving experience is completely free of charge, so make sure you sign up for some top-down driving fun!

Moss Pub: The Moss pub will be open for business during the evening hours on Friday and Saturday night. Come by for a cold drink and the best bench racing you’ll find this side of Siebkins. You can also challenge a friend to a game of darts or a race around our slot car track. And don’t miss the live music performed by Wes Cobb on Saturday night.

Historic Stock cars: You won’t find any cookie-cutter “Cars of Tomorrow” here—HSR’s Historic Stock Car class features a full field of competitive racers piloting the cars from NASCAR’s past. Be sure to walk through the paddock to see these famous former race winners.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Classic Motorsports Mitty. For more information, go to themitty.com.

In addition, both of the Dempsey Racing RX-8 will be at the event and Patrick will be there as well. We also would like to have the largest continuous line of Mazda's on track at the same time. We have confirmed, the the first ever production RX-7 will be at the event as well. the goal is to get as many Mazda owners we can at this event!

I am soooooo going to be at this. The paragraph below does not say it will be there but I bet it is.

"Mazda will also be celebrating the 20th anniversary of their historic win at LeMans in the Mazda 787b piloted by Bertrand Gachot, Johnny Herbert and Volker Wiedler. This marked the first time that a team/manufacturer that was not from the European continent won Le Mans. The Mazda 787b was also the first car to win Le Mans with a Wankel rotary engine. Look for some impressive displays in the Mazda historic racing show area commemorating this landmark victory."

i SO wanna go to this!

Given that my 8 is custom painted as an hommage to the 787B, it seems pretty obvious that I should make the effort to get down to this event, even though it'll be a fairly long ride down from Ottawa, Canada.

However, I've never been to Road Atlanta, nor any previous Mitty events, and I've never driven between Ontario and Georgia. I've got lots of questions and, so far, there is precious little information on the Classic Motorsports Mag website. I assume there is an entry fee for the Mitty. Are attendance numbers limited, do we have to register in advance? What about accommodations - do most folks camp at the track or are special "Mitty" rates at available at local motels and hotels?

If there are any RX-8Club members who've attended previous Mitty events or anyone familiar with Road Atlanta, I would be interested hearing from you so I can ask some questions.

I just checked the Road Atlanta website for ticket info. They do not seem to have ticketing all worked out yet but here are the phone numbers to the ticket office: 770.967.6143 or 1.800.849.RACE.

Website: http://roadatlanta.com/

This is the 2010 information. You can see a schedule and ticket prices for last year.:

Accommodations at local hotels will probably fill up. If you want a room, good idea to book it as early as possible. Camping is an option.

A group from the Georgia RX8 Club wil be attending as usual. If you would like to join in with us, I would suggest you join garx8club.com and go to this thread: http://garx8club.com/v3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2687
This will let you stay in the loop with the local organization and we'd love to have that good looking R3 hanging with the gang. Many of us drive the track so you would be getting to watch this from a more personal perspective. Of course, this invitation is open for any that would like to join us for the fun. :)

If you join garx8club.com, make sure you let me know so I can activate your registration. We are activating manually because of so many problems with spam.

cjcjag, that's a long-ass drive!

There are a few pics from the Mitty in 2006 in this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/se-rx-8-forum-30/hsr-mitty-challenge-april-29th-86048/page4/

Wow, thanks for all the info and links! I have registered to join the GaRX8club under the user name Canuk8. I'm really looking forward to the Mitty. I'm trying to find a co-driver now to help with the marathon drives (I'm a bit past my prime road tripping years).

One question: does anyone know if any 787Bs might be there?

Hopefully you will see a 787B there. There is a 787B in Atlanta being restored now. I hope to see it going around the track, but we'll see.

I really wanna go to this also

SilverEIGHT 01-30-2011 11:05 AM

Hi Holly, I think it is a 787 that is being restored. Not sure the difference in a 787 and the 787B.

This video shows both. It starts off behind a fence but it gets better. :)

You may be right Don. Thanks for the link to that video, love it.

Oh and something really cool is going to be there! Cam from Pettit racing is bringing---get this-- A semi direct injection rx7 build that is laying down about 400hp and is NA!
I have never seen or even heard of this being done before.
I may drive the R3 or my 'Old Betsy"--dont know yet?
Old Betsy is the the number 2 Rx8 in the world ( we think) that will be running the lower compression rx7 rotors with the Pettit SC set up.
Its going to be a great w/e.

Denny, glad you have her running. Dano has already called the back bedroom but you are welcome to take up residence where ever you like in the living room, in the garage, out with the raccoons or what ever you like.

"FubarDraco", I activated your account. Thanks for joining. Look forward to your input.
